A Stroll Downtown

Yesterday I had to run some errands downtown. Recently I managed to trade for a handy little pocket camera, so I took it along for its maiden "walk and shoot" voyage. Here's just a few of the snaps I caught along the way to share with folks curious about this corner of God's green earth.

When I was in Mozambique there were no monthly plans. Everything is done on "Pay for what you are gonna use" including electricity. For the phone you buy minutes ... however many you can afford. Same with electricity. For folks that have them, you can get a credit card reader installed in your home and just swipe and enter how much electricity to pay for.

You don't have people skipping their due payments because there ain't any!

If you have no minutes on your phone you can still receive texts or calls. You just can't make any calls or send texts.

I liked the system and have kept it up here. I pre-pay the minutes I am gonna use on my phone and don't have any monthly fees. If I don't use the phone it ain't costing me anything. :-)

What amuses me is seeing folks with fancy phones and no minutes or gigabytes for calls or internet. But they've got a phone that costs as much as my wife's motorcycle!

We've done the math a few times and with our ministry it makes more sense to pay our relatively low monthly fee than to have to pay for the minutes we need "on demand". But being able to nickel and dime the minutes makes sense for a lot of people. It's easier to scrape up enough coins to pay for a week's service than it is to commit to a monthly bill and have uninterrupted service for many people. When we hit the US we go with a monthly pay as you go SIM card. That's quite handy indeed. The old "Trakfone" or whatever it was made a lot of sense for folks not using them much. Haven't seen one of those in a while.

Yep ..... I use the "Tracfone" ...

since I don't use the phone much my "monthly" cost averages out to around $20 a month.

Mom had one...

until she washed it. They don't stand up to the regular cycle in a Maytag. She was never big on phones anyway. :-D

Mine is an old flip phone ...

no apps ... no gps ... no games ... It just makes calls and receives calls. You can text .. very slowly and painfully ... but it's mine! When I bought it I got the more expensive one. It cost me $19.00 .....
