Well I downloaded Firefox 12.0 and now I don't recognize anything.
Thank goodness, I found my bookmarks.
How do you delete your browsing history?
I wish I would have left it alone, but too late now.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

your home page in Firefox, in the menu at the top you can go to:
"Tools"
"Options"
Select the "General" tab.
Type in the URL or paste it or use one of the other options they list where it says "Home page".

I wonder if I can go back and download the old version I had.
I found my bookmarks and how to delete the history and go to private browsing.

I'll let you know where to find it. I'd forgotten that little item because they changed that way back in the versions before 12.0. Anyway, once I remember how to bring the menu back, I'll add another note here. 
OK. Here's how to get your traditional menu bar...

In the top left corner of Firefox 12 you'll see the orange Firefox tab with a white arrow pointing down. That arrow invites you to click on it to bring up a popdown menu. 
Click on it and you'll see a couple of columns of options. In the right hand column is the "Options" option. Click on it and then on the menu that opens up click on "Menu bar". Voilá! You've now got your traditional "File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, Help" menu bar.
Yeah, it's a pain, but poking around inside can help you find useful things, depending on what you do. I like to look around the "Add ons" section for useful stuff. Anyway, hope this helps.

either the orange Firefox tab or the menu bar. Yeah, I know. BUT, the options you have with the menu bar are available under the Firefox tab if you look around. They just aren't arranged very well. (for example, the switch to throw so you can see the menu bar is not very intuitive when compared to the options on the menu bar itself).
If you're concerned about finding your bookmarks, clearing your browsing history, etc, those options are all available through the Menu bar. A useful addition to the Firefox header (for lack of a better word in my mind right this second) is the bookmarks toolbar. You can insure it is showing by going to "View" then "Toolbars" and see that the "Bookmarks Toolbar" is checked. This gives you a chance to put frequently used bookmarks across the top of your Firefox window.

Go to the menu, select the following sequence:
"View"
"Toolbars"
and then uncheck "Menu Bar"
Your orange tab will pop back up - but you'll lose your menu bar. Follow the former directions to get the menu bar back.
