.357 Mag Large Pistol Primer?

I know .357 mag brass used to be made with a large pistol primer, what era would that have been? An older guy I know has a few boxes unprimed brass with LP primer. Was that how it originated or something tried later etc.?

The reason I ask is I got a bunch 357 mag brass from someone and there was 50 R-P nickel in there deprimed that I though were large pistol but after looking and priming a few they take a SP primer? Thanks.

I cannot say for certain but I too have seen these cases and most appear to be from the 50's, can't say I have seen any recent cases, after 1960 or so with Large Pistol primers. I am sure someone with more knowledge will chime in on it.

. . . it would be nice if anyone who sees some of these reports the headstamp information.

I seem to recall that some of the Super Vel stuff used large primers, but I could be wrong.

and never seen nor heard of LP primers in 357 cases. Thought I'd seen/heard everything by now. Got some 454 cases with LP and some steel 45acp cases

I have some LP 357mag cases around here that I think were given to my by Jim Taylor. Can't remember if they were R or W.

Initial ballistics were in the 40K+ range, 158gr @ 1500+fps - from an 8&3/8" N-frame.

It used LP originally, dunno when they switched to SP.
