Watched "Yukon Men" this evening. Noted use of AR-15
rifles, nearly 50% of those shown. Good for normalization of type in the mind of the public but just how popular is the 5.56mm cartridge up there?

The Mini 14 was the quintessention Native Alaskan rifle
the AR may have eclipsed it in the last few years.

yep....used for caribou, even grizzly etc.
Kinda kills the arguments against it for deer down here...

Yes that is the one.

I LOL when I read the innernet exspurts who rail against the 223 on deer.
It has accounted for deer and caribou and a halibut or three
I feel better knowing he has that and several 20 round mags living in the heart of Los Anchorage...

is the show worth watching?
nm
I think it depends on cover and terrain.
Some places if a deer runs a couple hundred yards, you never lose sight of it. Other places 200 yards is like 200 miles.
The 222 Remington and later the 223
have been fairly popular whitetail deer rounds here in Texas since the 50's. Everybody I know that has used them feel they do they job and neck shots are prefered.
If you can't stomach the insipid narration you can always
turn off the sound and just look at the pictures.

I felt that way about "Mountain Men".
The men were real. They were great, with three completely different environments and lifestyles. The editing and narration was an atrocity. My favorite example: Toms wife talking about how scared she is when he's away. They've been there for something like 20 years. The old girl is tougher than I am, and she's been living like this forever. She's not the timid, meek woman they try to make her out as. Check out Eustace on the internet. He comes off as a communal living hippie on TV. This doesn't match up either. Marty is the real thing too, the Alaska Trappers Association Trapper of the Year in 2001.
Television- bah!
It's readily obvious that the marketing in the gun business
is certainly not aimed at the "make do with what you've got" crowd.
They have to make it dramatic for the folks...
The episode of "Mountain Men" where the Alaskan is trudging through the snow got me. Yes, I know he could freeze to death on that hike, but I doubt the camera crew with him would just stand by while it happened.
That doesn't make money, new gun with new odd cartridge
sales makes money. Accessories, whether you need them or not, make money. New forms of old ways of doing things, ala the bore snakes, make money.

Nor would they want to freeze to death and not get the video
out to the producer.

Yeah Buddy....
We used to hunt near a 75x200 yard bramble thicket, located between huge crop fields, which we called 'the nursery'. You could lose a deer in there, 30 yards from where you hit em. Don't ask me how I know.
Nor would they want to freeze to death and not get the video
A mans got to have his priorities straight.
They reran it tonight.
I must admit I was surprised to see the AR15s being used for caribou. Critters must not be as tough in Alaska as they are down here.
Both AR shooters dropped their animals right there, or so
it appeared.
Now you know that some scenes are reshot or composites of film taken over time. You can really see that in the Swamp People footage where in one supposed incident the shooter has 3 different rifles... However, I liked the scenery and learned from the geography. I like the old time photos, too.

Tough? Caribou are not as big as moose:-)
I've watched moose walk off from car wrecks that totaled the car and killed the occupants...
