S&W K32 Project...

by Boge Quinn, Friday, August 24, 2012, 09:50 (4479 days ago)

Lately I've been really jonesin' for a K32, to go with my K22s and K38 - have y'all SEEN what K32s are bringing these days?!?! JEEZ.

Murbach has told me a few times about a K32 he had made up by Bowen many moons ago after his own fruitless search for an affordable original, and hinted that he had an extra brand-new K32Mag cylinder and original in-the-white K32 barrel laying around, which could be had for a specified sum if I could find a base sixgun. That proved to be easy, as our pal Matt Olivier told me he had an old K38 that had finish issues and a slightly-bulged-but-still-shootable barrel, which said sixgun could be had for a song. Furthermore, Matt offered to send Terry a brand-spankin'-new Ruger SR22 in exchange for Terry sending me the K32 parts (!), and it all came together yesterday when the K38 landed at the Hardware Store and the K32 parts landed in my mailbox. I had thought about having some nice custom stocks made for my K32 project, but the K38 arrived with a nice set of Diamond Targets numbered to the sixgun, so I'm thinking that will be about right.

Terry also had a brand-new K22 cylinder/ejector, and sent it along. I had already corresponded with Bowen about the project, and he seemed genuinely excited about the prospect - he said it was one of his favorite sixguns in two of his favorite calibers: the K32 cylinder will be rechambered for 327 Federal, and the K22 cylinder will be rechambered for 32 WCF, making a neat little combo gun (able to shoot 32 WCF, 327 Federal, 32 Magnum, 32 S&W, and 32 ACP).

Good news / bad news on the Bowen front: GOOD NEWS is that he is a bit short-handed in his Shop, especially for S&W work, so he'll have to do the work himself; BAD NEWS is that he is a bit short-handed in his Shop, especially for S&W work, so he'll have to do the work himself. In other words, my sixgun will be built by the Master, but it may take a while.

Anyway, thanks to Terry and Matt (and Hamilton) for their contributions to this project! Now to send the parts off to Bowen and WAIT...........

Y'all see a future Gunblast article?

S&W K32 Project...

Please, please, please do a Gunblast article on this project.

And if Mr. Bowen would take photos as the work progresses, that would be wonderful, too.

I'm green with envy, having lusted after K-32s for years and having missed out on a number of S&W 16s in .32H&R when they were available. I did finally satisfy my .32H&R craving with a Ruger Bisley small frame and an SP101, both of which are delightful little handguns, but neither of which is a K-32. (I also had Dan Pedersen rebore a Browning Lo-Wall from .22 Hornet to .32H&R, but that's a story for another time.)

I have a bunch of 32 Magnums, including my prized Harton...

...5-shot 32 Magnum Bearcat. But none of them are K32s! This is going to be COOL, made even cooler because of the involvement of my close pals.

Project... Great idea! That should be a fun little gun to

shoot. The owner of the first shop I worked in had his set K.22/32/38 and a 6" 19 to top it off. I have always liked the idea. Dean Grennel showed off his K-32 in the ABC's of Reloading- always made me want one of those.

I have lusted after K-32's as well.

The stuff of dreams, Boge.

My dreams, anyway, and apparently yours too.

What a classy setup it will be, eased along by good friends and built by the master. You can't beat that, but you will be able to shoot it!

The stuff of dreams, Boge.

Ifound a customized 4" S&W 32 at a gun show for a remarkable price. I was ready to buy when the owner was an honest man and gave me the full story and said that the gun has issues. It doesnt shoot well at all. Only accurate guns are fun so I let it go and always wondered if I could fix it. Have not held one for sale since and that was many moons ago. Good luck with your project it sounds like it will be wonderfull when done. J.Michael

Ireton Sports in Anchorage had a 6" for sale about 8 years

ago. I knew what it was and how rare it was, but didn't have $1200 or $1250 to buy it. I looked at it, but don't remember if I picked it up or not. I did tell a guy who used to collect Smith & Wesson revolvers about it and he went and looked at it too. It was at a gun show, and I think a collector from Ohio bought it.

Am Looking Forward To Reading More About It...

as things progress and when the project is complete. Certainly looks like a wonderful project.
