Speaking of .25-20's...

A friend of my brother had a rifle he wanted to sell and I asked for some pictures. Put a little hurt on my wallet before breakfast this morning but I like what I see.

….but that’s awfully tight quarters under the scope. Maybe use higher rings for clearance?

Any idea who built it, or who made the barrel?

Otony, who would have gladly bought it himself!

I love it…..

Nothing known at the moment. My brother will pick it up Thursday this week and not sure when it will land here...maybe the weekend? I'll have to check it over when it's in hand and report back.

Edit: As for the scope, yep, that's close for sure. I'll have to figure what I want to do when I see it.

Lovely!

I have little to no experience with the .25 WCF, but I can’t blame you.

Surely you could rebarrel it to .32 wcf with little trouble….

HAHAHA!! You funny!

There are two other .25-20's hiding here so I expect it will settle in nicely.

Since this subject came up I have been drawn down the "rabbit hole vortex" of internet searching for .25 wcf revolvers, both the very rare originals and the $2,500 to $4.000 custom 5 to 8 shot customs. Searching for general information, that is.....way too expensive for my paygrade. There are quite a few posts on the subject on lee martin's sixgunning site. Most interesting....

Glenn Fryxell has a custom .25-20 Ruger Blackhawk built for him by Rob Applegate. They both participated in earlier versions of this forum, back in the day.

I’ve handled that Ruger, but don’t rightly recall if I fired it.

I have read several.....

of his articles and internet posts on a old model ruger converted to .25 hornet but I cannot find a link to any of them right this minute.

If the link works properly.....

I've found that these scanned editions are easier to read if i capture screenshots of an article's paragraphs and then read later by zooming in on a photo.

For the last 16 years, Glenn lived about an hour from me. That is until we moved to the beach.

I saw him every so often, we went to the Taffin Banquet together.

I doubt I could ever have the breadth of knowledge he has regarding bullet casting and loading for oddball calibers.

Amen Tony. I have spent a couple of very pleasurable hours with Glen at Holiday. I mostly sit and listen with probably a lot of questions asked.

i have an old original marlin 94 short rifle with octagon barrel in 25/20, really smooth and accurate. also a marlin model 27 pump in 25/20 that is very light and handy, and a remington model 25 pump as well..

i even have a ruger blackhawk that was converted to 25/20 and it is amazingly accurate [ had gary reeder fit it with a 256 winchester cylinder as well.

yes, i do like this cartridge !

I have a dim memory of seeing/shooting Rick's [last name? The Auto-Mag guy] .25-20 Clements or Bowen conversion. At the time, I did not have the same sensibilities as I do today and did not appreciate it as would have been proper.

I don't know what I'll do with it, other than shoot it. It's legal in MN for deer but I wouldn't. I'd like to make a Montana turkey hunting trip or something similar.

would be good for turkeys

with proper loads like out to 100 yds or so.

i found the speer hot cor 75 gr to be very accurate and holds together even with hotter loads. and works okay with lighter load as well.

found that the warm loads and softer loads at 75 yds both grouped very well, with the hotter loads hitting about 3" higher but other both were centered on the target with no change of the sights

Good info. Thank you.

What powders do you use? I've got lots of data and a fair assortment of components and can probably gin up just about anything.

Cheers!
