Amazing how the civil war seems so long ago, but technology managed to capture glimpses of those times for us to contemplate.

A few years ago I went on a Civil War kick and read everything I could download onto my Kindle from both sides of the conflict, from lowly enlisted men up to the generals. Fascinating reading. Never once did I see "We were fighting to keep the darkies enslaved." or anything remotely like that. And "We were fighting to free the slaves." was not that common of a theme either. It mostly came down to "We were fighting because our homeland was invaded by the north." and "We were fighting to preserve the union." Anyway, found this one on Kindle so it's now in the reading schedule. Thanks!

But it wasn't until I started hanging out with the folks here that I started questioning the 'history' we were taught. I do appreciate the learning.

look at the manipulation of current events in the way the media describes things and you'll get an idea of how the north made their version stick. Just consider how most of us could care less what color someone is, what languages they speak (although we prefer English when in our own country) or their nationality. BUT because we insist the rule of law be followed we are labeled as xenophobic hate mongers. Yeah. Right. Human nature hasn't changed much in the past 160 years...
