You can say CarBEAN or you can say CarBYNE

I've heard carbine pronounced both ways; CarBYNE and CarBEAN.

I tend to accept the first, as a farm combine machine is pronounced ComBYNE and things are ComBYNED together.

BUT, in The Last of the Mohicans, the nickname for Hawkeye: 'La Longue Carabine' (Long Rifle) which was also used by the French speakers I ran into when I was stationed in Germany for our full sized M16A2s compared to their FAMAS bullpups, pronounced it as CaraBEAN

So there.
