Had fun with the old flat top .357 Ruger today
I am carrying it with the 125 gr. Speer Gold Dot bullet over 18.5 gr. of H110. Nice load .. recoil is not heavy. I wanted to set the sights about 3/4" to 1" high at 25 yards. Fiddled around with it for a bit and got it close. I put black tape on the target to give my old eyes a good point of aim. I held level with the bottom edge of the tape.

I was resting the barrel for that target. After I got the sights close I spent some time shooting standing up, two-hand hold. I like the old gun.

Look great! I wish I could shoot that well!
My cheapskate targets are made of simple copier paper with a 2” black square sticker. I couldn’t find any 2x2’s but Amazon has rolls of 4x2” black stickers. I think they are printable labels or something. I roll out a few of them and cut them in half and stick on the paper. The 2” square is close to the size of many handgun front sights at 25 yards and the papers are easy to stock in a folder for future reference. I also always have a few sets not made up yet to take to the range in case a new handgun hits especially high or low, I can move the aiming point around to get hits on power to see accuracy better.
My normal targets are cheap paper plates.
I can get 100 or more for a couple bucks. I have a lot of black ink that was left over from some project and I paint my aiming point.
Back when my eyes were younger I used a 1" square. It appeared about half the width of the standard Ruger front sight at 25 yards. I can't see that well anymore, but then it was wonderful for making small groups.

I have shot my share of paper plates, like you say they are cheap. These days I use cereal boxes. I cut the sides and the flaps off and use the front and back. I purchase the cheapest black paint I can and spray the size circle I want. In my lifetime I've never shot square targets though I feel I should have and may in the future. Nice six gun Jim.
