Taurus 327
I sometimes get bored and experiment with. Enter the Taurus 327. It was probably the cheapest or lowest cost way of scratching an itch. I already had 32 S&W long dies from messing with a H&R 732 years back and have been reloading for a 32-20 Smith of 1930 vintage. But there is something about the 32 cartridge that is appealing.
The gun and factory ammo first. I shot the 327 from a rest first to get a feel for the basic accuracy. The regular 100 grain Federal American Eagle soft point (rated 1500 fps) chronographed 1211/52/15 from the 2-inch barrel. I was shooting at 25 yards just to see what the gun was capable of.
The American Eagle load grouped well at 25 yards, but the group was 8 inches high and 4 inches to the right. The worst problem with that load is getting powder burned in the face. There is no way you could shoot this without eyeglasses.
The Federal HST 104 exited at 1231/58/18 grain shot high and to the right but grouped better and the blowback wasn't quite as bad but is still bothersome.
The Speer Gold Dot 100 grain exited 1229/20/7 and grouped well but still high and to the right.
I am hesitant to mess with fixing a fixed sight gun until I have several hundred rounds through it, but I went ahead an bought a higher front sight from Taurus.
I have loaded and shot about a dozen different load combinations using Hornady 85 and 100 grain XTPs, along with 115 grain Oregon Trail lead flat points in the last few months now and have come to the conclusion that the fast burners are the way to go in this short barrel revolver.
Titegroup and the Hornady 100 XTP has done the best so far loaded to either slightly under 1000 fps or slightly over 1000 fps. All the slow burners like 2400, 296/H110 and AA9 loaded close to maximum all throw unburnt powder back in your face with very high extreme spreads. The fast burners like Titegroup, 231, Unique don't powder burn me at all. It seems the barrel is just too short for the slow burning powders.
The new front sight cured the high shooting, but right now Kentucky windage is being used to correct the right shooting by sighting with all the daylight to the right of the blade in my sight picture.
Overall, I am okay with the Taurus, but I believe a Single 7 would be where this cartridge would shine. In the short barrel, I'll carry (if I carry it) the Speer Gold Dots. As far as reloading for the short barrel. Hot 32 H&R magnum type loads using the 327 brass will be the way to go with the short barrel.
I would eventually like a good standard field load using a gas-checked 100/115 Lyman type bullet at 1000 fps from the 2-inch barrel.
