Indoor Shooting

by JimT, Texas, Saturday, September 27, 2025, 19:14 (9 days ago)

Messing around in the shop ... decided to run some of the crappy Armscor .22's through the Bearcat Shopkeeper. I set up my bullet trap at 15 feet and shot a box of shells, offhand, working on sight alignment and trigger squeeze. Fun little gun!

I fired one shot each at 2 other of the little round stickers like the one directly under the trigger guard.

I guess if could make that first shot every time I wouldn't need a follow-up shot! :-)

Curious about your bullet trap...

by Paul ⌂, Saturday, September 27, 2025, 19:41 (9 days ago) @ JimT

What are you using as a bullet trap indoors?

It's a commercial trap.

by JimT, Texas, Saturday, September 27, 2025, 22:48 (9 days ago) @ Paul

Made by Champion. Weighs 22 pounds. Amazon sells them. I have been using it for about 8 years. Takes High velocity .22 Long Rifle ammo from a rifle with no issues. I wouldn't shoot .22 Mags into it but nothing in the Long Rifle will damage it.

Aaaahhh!!!! Nifty!

I've been using an apple box, stuffed with sheets of cardboard broad side on. So far I've not found anything that will penetrate it fully, not even 32ACP FMJ, not that I've shot that in the house, but did run a couple in it out at the gun range one time. A couple weeks ago I ran about 50 rounds or so of 30 caliber air rifle into it. It made a lovely cavity where they grouped, but penetration wasn't that deep. I just stuff shredded office paper into the cavity, apply a new sheet of cardboard to the face and keep on going. Those commercial traps are handy, don't have to sort much through the paper to recover the lead.

The .22's are mostly powder. When it gets heavy

I pour it out and add it to the lead pot.

It's a commercial trap........

I have a similar one I bought years ago from MidwayUSA, wasn't very straight, took a little bit of disagreement with a sledge hammer to get the sides to fit flush.

Bigger problem was the bullet bounce back, one or two bullets out of a ten round mag would come out of the trap and hit me or land near me from 30 feet away :-(

Looked at it several times trying to figure out what was causing the bullet ejection, it is a snail type with angled back plate. Finally solved the issue with mounting a thin durable rubber skirt in front of the trap mouth opening, though I still don't trust that 100%. Mostly, when testing a suppressor or function testing ammo I use a hard wood 4x4 and shoot into it. Mini Mag will only go in about an 1/8", standard velocity slightly less.

41 Mags rule, Baers rock!

I've never had a bullet come out of this one.

I won't shoot closer than 15 feet. In the shop I can get 25 yards if I need it. When I shoot distances further than 25 feet I add a larger backstop in case I screw up and miss the trap. It came in handy when I had someone else shooting and they missed the trap at 50 feet.

I have seen bullet traps that will contain .44 Magnum but they are HUGE!

The neatest indoor range I ever shot on was at the Ruger plant in Prescott, AZ. The backstop had water running over it .. a lot of water .. so there was no lead particles when the bullets hit the backstop. And they fell into water. It was a cool setup.

Suppressor testing

by Slow Hand ⌂ @, Indiana, Monday, September 29, 2025, 04:32 (8 days ago) @ Gunner

I have a 5 gallon bucket full of plat sand out in the garage I use when testing suppressor or more specifically suppressor loads. Like when trying to find the close to minimum charge that will still cycle an action. Things like 300 blackout in an SBR or goofy stuff like the threaded .38 super barrel I have and worked up a light load for. I just shoot straight down into it so no targets but it has absorbed many pounds of lead over the years. I should dump it in a wheelbarrow and sift out all of the slugs some day!

Bullet traps...

by Hobie ⌂ @, Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Wednesday, October 01, 2025, 21:19 (5 days ago) @ JimT

I have a similar commercial trap and I've shot up to .22 WRF into it, no problems. Fragments sometimes spit out the front. I am putting some putty on the back side to reduce the sound signature of bullets striking the back.

I also made a trap using a plastic storage bin filled with chopped rubber mulch. Cut a hole in the top and fill with a sheet of cardboard cut to size. Set on end it lasts quite a while. Replace the cardboard when rubber starts to leak out the front.

Pistols are fun but most are louder than the wife and dog like but rifles can shoot Aguila Colibri, CCI CBs (either length) & 22 Quiet, or other brands similar velocity and of course .177 to .25 cal air rifles.

Glad to see you are shooting these fun little guns.
