Guys I might be in some trouble.

Mrs. B is away all day today.

In her absence I elected to run a load of wash, specifically all my soiled shop rags. They're not worth a lot but some of them are good heavy terry-cloth rags, and I don't want to throw them away... hence I'm washing them. Just the cloths alone in a small load, heavy-duty cycle, double detergent.

Now, these rags carry on them WD-40, Ballistol, homebrew bullet lube, machine oil, and all manner of soils and stains. I figured a hot-water wash with plenty of detergent would get the worst of that out of them and I could use them again, more effective for having been cleaned.

But one of those rags was the one I wiped my hands and the rifle with after taking the stock off my Polish Mosin-Nagant carbine. Below the wood the action was positively crusted with Soviet-era gun grease, i.e. cosmoline. A good tablespoon or so of that got rubbed into the cloth.

Fifteen minutes into the hot-water wash cycle the laundry room stinks of cosmoline. After the wash cycle's over I don't dare put them in the dryer.

I wonder if I'll be able to get that odor gone before dinner time...

It isn't the odor you should be worried about. My father washed his shop rags while my mother was away in the 70s.

Thought he was golden until grease showed up on clothes on the next load.

Find something clean and white to wash, like a couple of towels and run them through afterwards with good detergent.

Evidently it left an impression.

If you remember this event from the '70s, it must have been pretty memorable.

Rather than risk getting grease on our good towels (another near-fatal error), I will run a load of my old work clothes. If I get grease on them, no harm done.

Thanks for the advice.

So far, so good.

After washing some of my work clothes, both clothes and the washer drum appear to be clean of any residual grease, and the odor has dissipated (thank you fabric softener).

I was able to get the work clothes dried and folded and put away before she got home, so I may yet be in the clear. We'll see.

PS: If you don't see any more posts from me you'll know what happened. :-D

This is good!

Glad it worked for you.

Yes, it was a solid memory. My Dad died when I was 13 from ALS, so this happened when I was 11 or 12yo. With three kids in private school, money was tight. Having to reclassify 'good' clothes to 'work' clothes and purchase new was a hit on the finances, no doubt.

The reason I said use some old towels or somesuch was to scrub the grease. It works far better than just soapy water. You can prove this by smearing grease on your forearm and trying to wash it off with just your hand and soapy water - doesn't work very well. Now try it with a soapy rag and it transfers to the rag...

For differing reasons...

I am not allowed to do laundry.

I'm good with that!

You and I are both golden on that point. The closest I am allowed to the washer and drier is when maintenance is requested.

I see a new machine & dedicated shop machine in your future

Best case new machine for her and one to wash brass and shop rags for you. You can try this. "I really screwed up this time dear, I don't know what I was thinking, it's totally all my fault, I am sorry you married such a worthless idiot, it will never, ever, ever, happen again, is there ANYTHING! I can do to make this up to you".

Make some salmon cakes. ntxt
