Mossberg forend….

by Otony, Wednesday, November 20, 2024, 19:47 (3 days ago)

I’m going to change the forend on my new Mossberg 590A1. It has a “tactical” style on it now, with slots for M-Lok accessories. I’m swapping it out for a traditional corncob style. I have zero interest in attaching gizmos to my shotgun.

I used to have one of those tools to remove the locking ring, the ones that are essentially a piece of tubing with nubs on the end. That was over 30 years ago, and it has gone the way of the dodo.

Any suggestions for a substitute tool? Or should I pop for another piece of tubing that will sit unused for a millennium thereafter?

I’ve convinced myself I can simply chase the locking ring with a piece of brass rod, tap tap-tapping it around.

Edited to add that I can duplicate the correct tool using a piece of PVC, but I can’t recall how firmly those locking rings are cinched down.

I would think you could make it work without the specific tool. Maybe a small punch and hammer to break it free then a thin screwdriver to push it around. I would think thinner pipe like conduit would work better but Most folk don’t have scraps of 1” or 1-1/2” conduit laying around (the bonus of working construction is you can pick up a lot of odd stuff!). You might get something like a 1” conduit coupling you could cut and file on to fit. Maybe a pair of larger snap ring pliers of you have a set? Would your former gun shop have something like that you could go in a borrow?

1. Find a similar shotgun, configured the way you like it, in a local shop.
2. Trade your shotgun for it.

No tools required. :-D

….well, just to put things in a bit of perspective.

We are moving to the beach (finally). Our house is being built to include a temperature and humidity controlled Secret Squirrel Cave. My intention is to keep my collection sequestered there, unbeknownst to the neighbors.

However, I want to have three firearms available at all times to repel boarders. My EDC, a well worn Smiff 642. A Glock 48, which is my primary carry whenever I leave town. And finally, the 590A1 which has a factory Marinecote finish to assist in delaying the ravages of our coastal environment. Those three will live quietly in the house and/or my pockets and belt.

It seems that Mossberg is on some sort of agenda to take all of their “basic” models and add one bit or another of “tactical fluff”, I think so that they can justify their fairly significant post Covid price increases. So they added a M-Lok forend to my otherwise traditional riot gun, if we overlook the Silver Surfer pajamas.

It may be wishful thinking on my part, but I want to stay below the radar when we relocate to Oregon. So no more firearm purchases. I know, I know, probably not too realistic on my part, but I’ve never bought a firearm in that state, even though I’ve lived but ten minutes from the state line these past 16 years. Thus far then, I am not on their radar.

I figure if I stay off the state’s computers, there is nothing for the powers to be to link me to firearms ownership. Oh, if I were to get jiggidy with one of the aforementioned trio of blasters, I’m certain the resulting deep dive into my particulars would reveal all post haste, but until then it is mums the word.

All of which is complicated by wanting to still be able to carry concealed legally. Which throws the whole Batman scheme out the window. A conundrum to be sure….

Action bars and all? And, might such an assembly be had off of one of the auction sites?

Far too much trouble, but yes it can be done.

I already have the replacement forend installed, I just used a brass drift and loosened the ring

The fore end nut on my 590A1 wasn't all that tight. I purchased an appropriate wrench off Amazon. It even allows you to remove the nut without taking the slide and fore end off the gun. The wrench was cheap and a lot easier than trying to use a hammer and punch...
