The next obscure cartridge obsession

by AaronB, Tuesday, September 03, 2024, 18:12 (79 days ago)

Today, knowing that I had some empty .32 Win Special brass that needed reloaded, I went online and ordered up some 170-grain softpoints for that caliber.

...which of course got my wheels turning. "What other cartridge would use those bullets?" I asked myself. "Well," my self answered back, "...how about .32 Remington?"

How about it indeed. Now I'm pondering whether .32 Rem should be the next obsolete round I get dies and brass for, or if it should be .303 Savage.

Because, you know. Undaunted by common sense.

The next obscure cartridge obsession

by BobM, Ohio, Tuesday, September 03, 2024, 20:24 (79 days ago) @ AaronB

I was in a Cabelas earlier today and there were three old Remington semi autos, Model 81 I think. One was in 300 Savage, one in 35 Remington, and the other in a 32 caliber, I think 32 Remington. They looked like the rifle Frank Hamer used. I knew they came in 25 and 30 caliber, I didn’t know about the others.

.300 Savage in a Remington?

You sure that was .300 Savage?

I would have thought .30 Remington, given that a lot of them were made in that caliber.

...and build a Schofield revolver in the same caliber to go with it. :-D

A much more pedestrian use...

is for 8mm Mauser. Commercial loaders use the .32 Spl bullet to keep pressures down just in case one of those dreaded ".318 bores" shows up. They weren't actually .318 but I digress. I have used cast .32 Spl bullets for my early Mausers with success.

Keeping on topic, I sure wouldn't shy away from the .32 Rem. I already load for a Model 14 in .30 Rem so, why not?

Or scale this one appropriately...

Have to watch velocity if you're hunting.

The 8x57 could probably overdrive my Hornady FPs somewhat, if I was looking to poke one through a deer. Not hard to back it off a smidge though.

How many grains is a "smidge"? (nt)

anymore. :-D

There is enough variety here that should I need more power, I'll grab something bigger all the way 'round.

.300 Savage in a Remington?

by JD, Western Washington, Wednesday, September 04, 2024, 12:02 (78 days ago) @ AaronB

Remington did make them in 300 Savage towards the end of their production. It was a good cartridge/gun combination, though a little heavy...

2 pinches = 1 smidge, 1 smidge + 1 pinch = 1 smidgen (nt)

That’s what the tag said. It was in a cabinet though so I couldn’t handle it.
