Query to whoever might know
Does the Winchester 1886 have enough action length to handle rounds of the original .45-70-500 overall length?
Not sure if this answers the question...
But Turnbull Restorations does conversions and such - just don't know about cartridge length.

I have exhausted my knowledge.

i have a couple of old originals that do handle them. my brownchester/ miroku will handle them as well, but that was after a throating job, that was pretty simple.
bullet shape may make a difference of course.
for 1886 overall cartridge length of 2.75-2,8 "
is what i found
Thank
you guys!
Take a gander at this.
How about 45-90???
Here's a fascinating story - and "an opportunity of a lifetime" coming up near the end of the month.
Saw this one myself
LGS had mildly optioned pre 98 1886 come in for appraisal.
It was a pistol gripped checkered octagonal barreled .45-70. Factory sling swivels. Fairly figured wood. The shop called it 85-90%, a clean rifle which had been used.
The kicker was, and it was lettered for this: It was special ordered to be stocked with wood supplied by the first owner himself, and grown on the family property. It was, this around 10 years ago, still owned by descendants of that first owner, and was within 10 miles of that original homestead, and the burial site of that owner.
I never knew the name of the current owner, nor where in Missouri they lived, beyond the Ozarks.
wow! bet that wasnt an inexpensive rifle
