300 Blackout for self defense.......

I find it interesting seeing all these self proclaimed experts on the internet claiming the 300 Blackout is not a good choice for self defense, one even claimed it was useless outside of a short hallway!

Would the same “experts” say the AK 47 with it’s 123gr FMJ @ 2,350 fps be no good as well???? Seems they liked it a lot, it does have a track record of over 70 years. Comparable 300 Blackout load is a 125gr Plastic Tipped bullet @ 2,175 fps or how about a 220gr Open Tip Match bullet @ 1,000 fps, I sure wouldn’t want to be hit in the chest with that round. But the “webperts” say it’s not a good round for self defense.

Personally I prefer my more accurate AR to an AK and would never feel under gunned with my 300 Blackout SBR for self defense. A couple of months back we had a little drama at the homestead and my first reaction was to grab the 300 Blackout SBR, load the 220gr sub sonic loads in a 30 round magazine and set the rifle besides my desk, luckily we had no problems but I never felt worried with my decision grabbing it.

The 300 Blackout was birthed by the ideal of a 30 caliber round like the AK47 used but for usage in the AR platform with a high velocity load like the 7.62x39 round and a heavy bullet sub sonic load for quiet work. Gotta figure if navy seals and other SF units chose it I can depend on it.

I don't fancy getting hit in the chest with much of anything. I do think the comparison you make between the BO and the AK to be valid...and the AK's been taking care of business for a while now. I don't have one but I have a couple bolts chambered for the 7.62x39. I have contemplated taking one for hogs one day. Right bullet and I would expect little drama.

All that said, I have little time for 'net experts. All too often they don't have a clue but, BOY, are they willing to tell you about it!

I've seen deer hit with 110gr Barnes X bullet, a couple hit with 125gr Ballistic tip, one hit with a 130gr Single Shot pistol bullet, one Russian boar hit with a 150gr ballistic tip and one deer hit with a 220gr Match King, I'd choose the lighter ones.


The 100 Barnes from a 16" barrel hit it in the neck, so that hardly counts.

The others were all fired from 10-11" Contenders. The 125's going the fastest in the 1900fps neighborhood. They all dropped on the spot. Not counting the 220gr Match King, that one was dropped with the 130gr SSPB, but kicking it bit and concerned it might get up, it got hit again with 220. Shot in the undersize, it did yaw and cut a big sword stab like wound, but hoping that happens wouldn't be my choice.

When I hunted with it, I felt confident in the 125BT's working out to 200 yards.

Most humans can't run 400 yards in 15 seconds and hop over a six foot fence, even when they haven't been shot in the chest like deer can ;-) , so I figure deer are a might tougher than men.

I’ve been on the 30l bandwagon from very early on. I really wanted a 30 whisper but back then, I wasn’t really into custom chambering and die’s only available from one source. I wasn’t ha0py that Remington and AAC stole JD Jones’ work, it was happy I could get SAAMI spec stuff. I found bulk boxed os Speer 125 TNT bullets and have used that for my high velocity round pretty much from day one. I haven’t shot anything living with it and that bullet probably would not be my first choice for deer but I’m betting it would do a fine job for ‘social work’.
For the heavies, I switched from jacketed match bullets to powder coated cast as long time ago. I’m not shooting them much distance and have no beliefs that a 220@1000fps will expand, so a cast lead will do the same as a jacketed for about half the cost. I use Missouri Bullet Company’s products and would recommend them.

The internet has given a voice to just about every single person on the planet and has allowed us to connect with people we would never have met in person. That is both good and bad…
