Wet suppressors
It's a long time tradition to reduce the sound signature of a .22 rimfire suppressor by using a liquid or gel inside it to absorb more heat in the initial shots, and thereby reduce the 1st round pop.
There are OSS stories of field operatives using aftershave in their High Standard HD suppressor guns.
It's a pain in the patookus to disassemble the apparatus, and the gel to the baffles outside of the bullet path, and reassemble it. And with a lot of gels, they smoke like a chimney the first few rounds.
Well ran out this AM, ran a couple hundred through 2 suppressors, and believe I noticed a much reduced sound signature on the 1st round, The automotive white lithium grease seemed to last longer, and did not get runny when left in the suppressor overnight. Yes, it smoked a lot.
Probably not something I'll do all the time, but I have no doubt I'll be doing it more.

I have tried a variety of ablatives in my 22 and 9mm cans. Mobil 1 synthetic oil did very well but stinks pretty bad. I’ve used a variety of spray oils and like you said, Smokey. I picked up some ultrasound gel as I heard it worked very well. I’ve also used electrician’s wire pulling gel. They all work about the same. I have wondered if the various oils help to loosen up the crud inside of cans and blow it out, or if they bake on and just crud them up worse! I’ve never thought of taking one apart and smearing grease onto the baffles. I have always just sprayed or squirted it in the threaded end.
Several years ago, I discussed the subject with the manufacturer of my 9mm cans. I told him some of what I had heard and read. He said he takes a large mouth water bottle with him. He locks the slide back, dunks the can in the water for a few seconds, pulls it out and gives it a shake. He said he shoots until it gets louder, usually a magazine or two and then repeats the process. Seems much easier than dealing with all the other gunk!
I know some manufacturers used to make ‘sealed’ cans that had wipes in them front and rear or at least up front, so you could load it up with some oil or grease and carry it around with it sealed up by the wipe. They fell out of favor when the atf decided that wipes are the same as baffles and can only legally be replaced by the manufacturer.

I have never tried any substance in mine, always felt the slight reduction wasn't worth the messy clean up. From my research electricians gel works best while dipped in water is easiest to deal with.
I mainly use CCI standard velocity in mine, they will cycle semi auto pistols, 22/45 and SR22 with no issues and are consistent in sound from first to last shot. They make almost no noise from my 20" Ruger American Rimfire rifle

I have definitely noticed more of a first round pop with my 9mm cans vs .22 cans. I assume it’s just the volume of air they can hold that has to burn the oxygen out of it before it quiets down.
CCI Std Vel is the stuff of choice, but.....
I'm still in possession of a large amount of 36 grain Remington subsonic, not considered that choice a round.
And that's what I was shooting yesterday morning.
Internet wisdom is that the stuff, now discontinued, was average to poor. I've had no issues with it, it seems to function 100% and is indeed subsonic. It's dirty, and the smudge-y case necks indicate in is likely a might under pressured.
But I have a lot because I was one of those scoundrels who hoarded ammo during the pandemic, & really still do. Said Remington had the endearing trait of showing up regularly at Bass Pro, and Whale~Mart. It also was in 100 round boxes, so when The Big W- limited you to one box, you were getting 100 vs. 50.
So I have a soft spot for it, but that doesn't mean I'm not trying to burn it all up.

Funny thing is CCI Standard Velocity is 1070 fps while CCI Subsonic is 1020 fps and usually cost more per 100 rds. I have to go down to CB Long and it's 720 fps before I hear a difference in report, though it will NOT function the action of my pistols nor the 10/22 Lite which I have the barrel threaded for suppressor use. While the Standard velocity will function everything and shoots really good in the Ruger American Rimfire rifle, averages .6" 5 shot groups at 50 yards.
