Handgun scopes.
I have a friend in need of a decent handgun scope. Back in the late 90's, I owned a couple of T/C Contenders and kept up handgun scopes. He's asking for my advice on a decent one these days and I haven't a clue other than Leupold. I was using one back then along with a Simmons scope that held up well for the cartridge I was using it for (7-30 Waters).
The long and short of it. The firearm is a Ruger Redhawk in .44 Magnum. He's not one for heavy loads, mostly 240-250 grain bullets at a little less than factory velocities. Oklahoma whitetails aren't all that tough, nor large. He's hoping to find a decent 2X7 variable powered scope. Leupold scopes are off the table due to cost.
Any suggestions from the group? I know you get what you pay for, but I'm almost sure he'd balk at anything in the $300 plus range.

CHEAP IS TOO EXPENSIVE--GO WITH A 2X LEUPOLD.

Your other option is the Burris 2-7x for $269 or junk. I have no experience with newer Burris but they have always made decent scopes, as I have Burris 2x's from 86' and 05'. Had a 4x Leupold but sold it, and a old 2-6x Simmons which came off a 454 and I mounted it on a Savage 187J 22lr bolt action pistol. If the ranges will not be too far, use a 2 or 4x, variable are big and you really don't want all that mass and weight on top a Redhawk which in the battleship anchor weight class already
Try the used market, but remember while Simmons made good variables for a period then they made junk in China Also have seen Leupolds with loose insides from be pounded, I would only buy on the used market if I could look at it in person and shake it a bit to check it.

41 Mags rule, Baers rock!
I've been using Burris as well as Leupold. There aren't a
lot of choices right now.

Is immediate eye relief.....
like a scout scope an option ? I mention this because I simply cannot hold steady a heavy six gun or pocket rifle at arms length. I have gone to using this and have not suffered any concussion as yet.....

Good price point versus proper handgun scopes.

A used gloss black Leupold 2x juSt came up for $150. I can get contact info if you want ot.
Thanks for the replies everyone.
I spoke to my friend this morning. Given the prices and options, he has to decided to opt out looking for a variable power scope and look into the red dot styles.
Thanks for your input!
