Are there specific brands you all recommend or avoid?

Pmags or Brownells if you want metal.

I'm still using surplus Adventure Line mags from the 70s - they outlasted most of my Colt mags of similar vintage.

I bought a handful of Brownells 20 rounders a few years back because my .300 subsonic ammo feeds better from them. They are good, solid mags and have served me well.

Hard to go wrong with PMags, I’ve got a few .50 cal ammo cans full of them.

Honestly when it comes to metal mags, I’ve had goos luck with pretty much any USGI mag, new or surplus.

I’ve had good luck with CProductsas well.

P mags are excellent. I've also had good luck with C Products mags and D&H aluminum milspec mags. Palmetto State Armory has a good deal on the D&H mags for $7.99 and free shipping if you buy 10 or more...

Palmetto also has a great deal on Gen 2 P-mags for $7.99 if you enter the coupon code "pmag" and again free shipping if you buy 10 or more...

Circle K GI contract mags were supposed to be good (aluminum). What I read was that the government would award contracts to disadvantaged companies, they would make so much money that they weren't disadvantaged anymore, so the contract would go to the next company, and so forth. I don't recall any that were known to be bad, but I've seen recommendations to use certain types of followers.

Every M16 magazine in existence, and are buying M3 PMAGs. You may find that instructive.

Furniture by caliber. For instance, black for 556, tan for 300blk and then follow the same pattern with mags.

And yes, under certain conditions a 300blk will chamber and fire in a 556 chamber. Creates interesting rifle wreckage.

At a range where I travel to for matches occasionally, one of the members tells of a new member, and brand new handloader, that loaded his first batch of .223 with 25 grains of Titegroup. We can all try to guess the end result, although from further descriptions it went well beyond what I could guess. Thankfully the shooter was not injured.

I do exactly that black for 5.56, and FDE for 300 BLK.

I like the Lancer mags
And USGI mags
And ELander, Israeli mags, like a USGI mag but steel instead of aluminum
And PMAGS

I Also have a few Troy mags, they are OK but seem flimsy compared to a PMag
And I have a few Hexmags, no complaints
