On this day in 1992, 1,800 United States Marines arrive in Mogadishu, Somalia. Anyone one here in that group?

What's it like there in the winter if you don't mind my asking?

Hot... Hehehe ... compared to Sembach Germany my home station at the time... I was bouncing around from op location to op location... had teams scattered throughout northern and east Africa, Mideast ("choice locations"), the Balkens (Chesnia, Sarajevo), all over Europe... I was NCOIC of the Radio Communications Section and on occasion (when on extended deployment) either the Team Chief or 1st Shirt of the deployment team... my son joined up in mid-1990's and was a weapons targeting specialist for AC-130 Gunships at Aviano during the mess in the Balkins ... there were some "very interesting and exciting" TDY's when I was assigned with the 1st Combat Comm ...

Just looked on Google Maps. Didn't realize it was so close to the equator. And thanks for all you've done.

not Chechnya ... had that region on my mind when I typed that in... and didn't re-edit the post... I'm getting old... I was thinking back to the Bosnia-Herts mess and for some reason Chechnya crept into my mind... Probably have to do with Rebel operations throughout the region...

I spent 29 months in Germany. Nice summers but at times winter could be a little much.

yeah... you get to appreciate snow tires during winters... driving to work became a pucker-power experience on a daily level... Here in the Ozarks where I live, it reminds me a lot of the Sembach region I was at... it was about 20 miles east of Ramstein AFB... Sembach used to be an old German WW2 airfield ... when the unit moved to Ramstein in 1994, the drive from Sembach to Ramstein in winter was especially "exciting" ...

Spent a few weeks at Ramstein Hospital guarding a felon in the phyc ward. Air Force had some great chow.
Served with a guy who was there as a Marine.
