A friend wants a laser on his AR....

.....but I'm afraid I've never really messed with such devices other than to mount a few on pistols for customers.

Pretty sure both his AR carbines have standard style forends, no rails, but I will double check. Can anyone of y'all make some suggestions to fit rail forends as well as standard plastic forends. I'm not even sure how one goes about mounting a laser w/o a rail?

Best web site for this kind of issue (and almost all other modern AR questions) is probably m4carbine.net.

If he has a bayonet lug these can work

There are also bolt on rail sections that hook through the cooling holes on a standard fore arm. They aren't super stable, but if he's just wanting it for up close, home defense distances, they should be 'close enough'

Another option depending on if he has a flat top or not could be one of the 45 degree mounts on the flat top rail in front of a non carry handle sight. If it is for HD distances, make sure he understands sight offset and the distance between the dot and sights and the bore can be 2-3"

That bayonete lug mount is pretty impressive! I have something similar that bolts through the front sight...to the front side...and lays down over the barrel nice and low. I got mine from a friend that got a few from the guy who made them and we haven't seen another since. Maybe they are out there though. I'll post a picture of it later today. It's a neet design.

I've seen that style too. I totally forgot about it though.

Something like this?

It lays right above the barrel in front of the FSB. The part with the sling swivel sits inside the base and the rail sits in front and they bolt together.

Found both....

...Apparently they changed the design a bit. They also offer a different style like you guys mentionedo.

But what about the laser itself? A year recommendations?

A pistol light/laser combo...I think. It should fit nicely on that mount I have. That's my plan for my carbine but without the laser version. I like that it sits right below the front sight and it's centered...no issues with clearing doors from left vs right, etc.
