Cast bullets in 30-06

by Bryan ⌂, Ft Worth, TX, Saturday, February 25, 2017, 10:33 (2766 days ago)

I want to start shooting cast bullets in my 03A3. What articles or books do you recommend as I haven't shot cast in my 30-06s before.

Favorite molds, tips or tricks? Thanks.

I think you will find the following cast projies to work for various uses:
some use the little plain base 32 caliber pistola bullets
115 grain cast gas check of your choice
311291
311041
I hear (read) that the Lee 115, 150, 160 and 180 grainers work for many.
Lyman and RCBS have both produced loading manuals for Cast.
There are some web sites with cast as their basis.
Then there is the Cast Bullet Association.
As is in many cases, A Google search is your friend.

As with all . . . Be sure to thoroughly clean jacketed bullet fouling out of the gun before starting with cast. "Wipe Out" is one of your friends here.

Do you have the RCBS Cast Bullet Manual?

When Tank sent me a pile of cast .30 cals he sent me a xeroxed page of the loads... I really need to by the book myself.

Do you have the RCBS Cast Bullet Manual?

Lots of good info here:

I like the RCBS 30-180GC but as said above, lots of 30 cal molds available.

Yes, really clean your barrel before shooting cast.

Cast bullets in 30-06

First off, make sure that you drill the flash holes larger or you'll quickly end up with headspace problems as the primer with the standard flash hole will shove the case forward and most cast bullet loads don't have enough pressure to seat the case back against the bolt face again.

I believe that probably the best mould there is for the 30-06 is the Lyman 311299. About 200 grains, bore riding nose, and good bearing surface.

Have you used this mold John...

I have used the 313299....

I've used the 313299 in the 303 british, and have used the 311299 bullets cast by a friend in the 30-30 (single shot rifle). One of my friends who shoots LOTS of cast bullets swears by it in the 30-06 and I REALLY respect his opinion. The 311299 performs better than anything I've tried in most 30 cal rifles. Since I don't have a mould for it yet (I do have a 313299....), it's next on my "to buy" list.....

Thanks for the info - NT

The best reference out there....

by Glen, Sunday, February 26, 2017, 20:19 (2765 days ago) @ Bryan

....for cast bullets in the 30-06 is the NRA's cast bullet handbook, which has several excellent chapters dedicated to cast bullets in .30 caliber service rifles, but that book can be a little hard to find. I like the RCBS 30-180-FN bullet (which runs about 190 grains) in .30-06. For 1 in 10" twist rifles, I generally shoot 35 grains of 4895 for about 1900 fps. For my 1 in 12" twist Husqvarna .30-06, I like to step it up to about 2100 fps.

Thanks Glen. I was hoping you would respond. NT

I am assuming you have read the book written by someone here also and/or have perused some of the cast lead shooting found here at http://www.lasc.us/ArticlesFryxell.htm .
