If one were inclined to buy or build a 450 Bushmaster upper,

where would be the best place to shop? The more I look at the 450 Bushmaster, 458 Socom and 50 Beowolf, I really like the former the best. The bullet weights combined with the right velocity and a straight wall case all add up to just what I want.

Jared, do you think there is a real advantage to the 50 Beowolf over the 450 Bushmaster? I haven't seriously followed either but I like the ballistics of both. The 450 seems a bit more appealing with .452 caliber bullets, 240-300 grain bullets and a bit higher velocites. I'm not sure if ammo, dies, components or magazines and such are more more readily available in one version over the other though...or pros and cons of each for that matter.

No matter what you load it with neither Is a long range rifle. I have shot both and own the beowulf. The Bushmaster is a little cheaper to feed, but I don't consider either a volume shooting rifle.

There are several good bullets and a lot of bad ones for the .450 bushmaster. Most all bullets will work in the .50 Beowulf. It runs at a little less pressure than a .500 S&W so velocity out of a 16" is about the same à son a 8 3/8" in the S&W.

The 3 loads i have been using most are a cheap 334 gr Rainier PHP at 1850 FPS . A 375 gr Barnes at just under 1800 FPS, and a 450 gr cast LFN at 1550 FPS. Tony is running a 500 gr Hornady at 1400+ and that is a load I would like to play with.

The 375 gr Barnes at 1800 is a hammer as is the 450 gr cast , either would kill most anything that's needed it. The Beowulf will outrun the 50-70 with all weights and run with a 50-90 up to 500gr or so. I haven the played with any of the ultra lightweight bullets but they can be had down to 250gr if that is what you are looking for.

The .450 is a good cartridge and makes great sense in states with cartridge restrictions. It reminds me a little of the .444. I love the .444 but a .45-70 is just a better all around cartridge.

I haven't had any trouble getting components. A friend went with a .458 SOCOM and there is almost no published load data for it. I was trying to help him get some loads worked up for it. The newest Lyman has some data but it is really weak.

I will say I haven't had anyone shoot it with those 450s at 1550 and not have a smile on their face. They hammer steel or whatever you are shooting at. It isn't quit either a heavy .45-70 but it also isn't far off. The recoil is much more plesent and you get 7+1 with a 20 round magazine.

You've probably shot some hogs with it. I'm sure it does fine but I just wondered what you've observed. I would def get the 50 over the 450 if it were me but I'm already loading for the 500 WE in my FA so it's the same bullets. I also just like 50's.

Haven't shot a hog with it yet. Missed one that's was running at night a while back and that has been it. Carried it hunting several times this season and never fired a shot. I have killed a bunch of stuff with heavy .45-70 and don't expect it do perform much different.

Accuracy has been in the 1"to 2" range with most loads. Not target grade but more than good enough for any range I would be shooting with it.
