What's your fav squirrel hunting setup?
I'm returning from a great weekend of shooting in MO. Watching all of the squirrels playing and shooting a friend's sweet Winchester 52 Target got me thinking about squirrel hunting.
What's some of your fav setups?
Marlin 39A...
...with an old Weaver K4 on it with narrow crosshairs.
Remington 581 left hand bolt action - very accurate

TC Seneca .36

My fav setup isn't actually a gun...
it would be using a redtail hawk in warm climates and a goshawk in a cold climate. Some of you know I've done falconry for years. Seeing a hawk rip a big squirrel off a tree is pretty awesome.

On the gun side of things, a Winchester 52 sporter is pretty spiffy. Would like to try my new mini Sharps in 22 Hornet with a Wm. Malcolm scope. Really any day in the woods with squirrels is fun. I enjoy it more than deer hunting actually.
Marlin 39A...
Yep
I would love to have a little .32 or .36 flintlock. NT

My fav setup isn't actually a gun...
Now that is cool!
What mount did you use on the 39A? NT

What's your fav squirrel hunting setup?
The last time I got to squirrel hunt in MO the AK Church Old Model Single Six took more squirrels than anything else I used. Also took a couple with a Mossberg bolt action with an original Mossberg 4X scope in a side mount. Felt more accomplished with the Single Six, though.
Either a wuppressed Winchester 69
Or this one:
No doubt John. Even better when you make it yourself! NT

Nicely done. Would like to use my .32 Single Six...
and it would be fun to get one with the old Bearcat.
Last summer...
we really cleaned up on the ground squirrels in NW CO. Lost count, but over 400 on a couple different properties. 10-22 with a Centerpoint 3-9X32 scope on it. Had a real blast improving the breed by destroying the idiots. The most fun, again, was with the Single Six. Busting squirrels out around 70-80 yards while my local guide (landowner, friend) was missing them with the rifle was a real hoot!
I've never been around a lot of ground squirrels...
except some rock squirrels in Alaska. I'm sure it's a hoot. Also, haven't done the big rock chucks or groundhogs. I have done a fair amount of prairie dog shooting. That's a blast.
My dad used to spotlight rats at the dump growing up...
he's got some interesting stories about the ground crawling when he lit it up. Yuck.
It used to be a Remington 550-1 with....
......a factory installed Lyman peep. I gave that rifle to a friend who's father had owned one way back when. Also gave him a 1911, cause he is just that nice a guy.
Switched over to a pair of rifles, a Marlin 39A after I was inspired by Glen the Enabler, and a sweet CZ 452. The Marlin is wearing a Skinner peep, and the CZ has a Weaver rimfire version of a K4. Not sure if Weaver makes those anymore, but it is very decent glass for the money.
I have a couple of truly awesome grownup air rifles that actually get used more around the farm than the rimfires. That's because of the proximity of neighbors. Mostly use the rimfires when we shoot sage rats in vineyards, where the Marlin sees a bit more use as it is typically pretty short range.

This d@mn website wouldn't let me type "a-dult air rifles", sheesh.
Wouldn't let me type m-ature either. Come on!
If you need one, I may have one here somewhere.
Let me know and I can look. I know I *had* one when I bought my 39 and removed the scope. The problem is recalling where I cleverly hid it.
I would like one. If you don't need it, drop me a line.
Thanks.
12 gauge. Field load 6's or 4's.
The 4's penetrate the nests better.
C'mon Tony! The site works fine...
You just have to learn how to spell. For instance, according to the current "UNABRIDGED DICTIONARY OF LOWER DOLTIC":
M-A-T-U-R-E is spelled "mah cher." Two words
A-D-U-L-T is spelled "at dolt". Again, two words.
Cheez! Where did you all go to school at?
C'mon Tony! The site works fine...
Beeman R-10 5mm with a 1X7
Tasco airgun scope. Filled a full sized pick up truck with that and a Falcon 5 slingshot. I'm from NJ both are still illegal.
E-mail away!

Squirrels with a slingshot. That's cool. NT

No one favorite...
What I really love about hunting squirrels is that there are lots of them and you can use about anything that suits your fancy on any given day. I have hunted them with everything from a 2 1/2" S&W Mod 19, to an original Colt Lightning rifle in 44/40. Have taken the greatest number with a S&W Mod 18 and have had a good deal of fun with a Win 52 sporting a 15X Lyman, Super Targetspot. Hope to borrow an original Win 62, 22 short gallery rifle, yet this year to get out and take a few.
The Lightning is cool. Hard to beat a Win 52 or 62. NT

If you would ever come to Montana in June we could fix that.
..
We need to do that for sure. NT
