Just put a Tech Sight on my AK... I'm impressed
AK open sights are getting to be a challenge for my aging eyes, so I thought I would give the Tech Sight rear aperture sight a try. I'm used to using aperture sights from years of competition and military rifle shooting, and they are a lot easier for use with aging eyes. Plus, for the AK they literally double the sight radius!!!!
I'm a "picky" engineer (My friends tend to use the word "anal" when they think I can't hear, but I'm sure they mean it in a good way ). This sight is extremely well made. Tight tolerances, well designed and well made, plus super strong so that I don't think that you damage this thing with a hammer. It took a bit of fitting to get the rear to fit in the recoil spring guide rod slot at the rear of the receiver. Tech Sight says to use a file to remove material if required, but the steel is so hard that on mine a file wouldn't touch it. I ended up using a stone, which I prefer anyway as there is less chance of removing too much material. 20 minutes of work and it fits perfectly. Just enough clearance to allow it to slide into the slot, but no movement or wiggle. Very nice!!!!!!
The Tech Sight makes removing the action cover a bit more work, but probably only adds 20 seconds or so to take down.
At the range the sight was MUCH MORE USABLE than the dinky original sight. I could shoot decent groups again!!!!! It is the best money I have spent on one of my AK's !!!!
I liked this sight so much that I'm going to order one for one of my folding stock Yugo AK's.
While I'm not the biggest fan of AK rifles, I do find it interesting to see how the design functions and how the designer solved the same basic problems that every other designer has had to contend with. While AR's are more accurate and nicer made (I have several....), the AK is a functional brute of a rifle, plus I have LOTS of ammo for it from back when you could buy the stuff for 6 cents a round..... When I bought my AK's you could buy decent examples for under $300, and I've come to appreciate them for what they are.......
Nice review. I went a different route...
I like the Ultimak gas rail for AKs and have done that a couple of times. I add a red dot and can shoot with both eyes open quickly and accurately.
Tech Sight AK-100 Review (from mid July)
In my plodding quest for practical accuracy from my old WASR-10, I ordered a Tech Sight Model AK100S for the WASR 10. This model has the 0-2 'flip' aperture found on various issue M16 and M4 rifles. Tech says their unmarked aperture adds 0.036” of elevation over the one marked 0-2. Since I zero practically all bottleneck rifle cartridges at 200 yards, that should put me in the ballpark at 300 yards with the taller aperture.
Elevation is accomplished via your issue AKM front sight- which you can precisely center in the hood, because the Tech Sight has standard, 'bullet point' windage adjustment.
I found this sight very easy to shoot well and adding 8” of sight radius helps. The target itself is much clearer than with the standard AK sights. I could shoot the AKM sights well for a few shots, but on small targets at distance they fuzzed badly and pretty quick. With the Tech I could easily focus on the 5” spray-painted dot at 196 yards. Seeing it well means hitting it, in this case 5 straight with a couple on the edges.
Even better news was by flipping up the long-range aperture, I could put three in a B27 at 300 yards with nothing outside the 8 ring. Downsides? Field stripping is slightly more complicated. The Tech comes with a dedicated dust cover, held in place by detents on either side of the sight tower. And that tower is too tall to accommodate any siderail scope/mount which sits low enough to be useful. There's always the Ultimak rail, if one is so inclined.
I'll happily accept those trade-offs for a set of irons that actually work, on the AKM platform.
The sights are a big reason I don't like the AK, the
generally short stocks are another reason.

They are great sights and mine returns to zero...
after disassembly, like a champ,
I replaced the short stock with a Nato length stock. NT

Since I shoot corrosive ammo, I want to remove the gas tube
.
I replaced the short stock with a Nato length stock. NT
The Zuhkov has a good range of adjustment and is solid, once locked.
I saw that. Those work for me.
