94 Trapper in 30-30 nice little gun lousy sights... Need
some recommendations for replacement irons; looking at XS sights...

My default choice would be the Williams FP, then a STEEL
Lyman or Redfield and then the XS. I would want the range of adjustment the older receiver sights have. That's me. The XS is a solid sight.

Sort of agree with Hobie.
My first choice would be an old steel Lyman if you can find one for a reasonable price. Second would be a new Lyman or Williams FP.
If you know your going to set it up for basically one load then the XS would be fine.
My two cents worth and probably over priced.
I put a Williams receiver sight on mine too
Mine is the economy version but a whole lot better than the iron sights that came on it. I have a bead front that I periodically paint blaze orange.
Might try Skinner.
My brother has been using Skinner sights of late and loves them. http://www.skinnersights.com/winchester_26.html
I have Redfield and Williams on mine which work fine too.

Lyman 66.
Hey Rob, "lousy sights"?
John Wayne got by with them "lousy sights" just fine. Lucas McCain did too.
I put a Williams FP on mine and am happy with it
I tried a Skinner peep replacing the factory open rear sight, but that didn't help the problem of a very short sight radius, so I went with a Williams receiver sight. I'm very happy with it...

Go flat. They are especially easy for old pistoleros to use. http://www.thesixgunjournal.net/improve-the-oem-sights-on-your-rossipuma-model-92/
;-) I am pretty sure the Duke had a brass bead, the Rifleman
didn't use know sights... (One of my favorite shows as a kid, my first cowboy hat was just like Mark's) These are just round steel front and a poor interpretation of semi buck horns shiny blue steel they don't present a good sight picture for me...years ago a friend had the same carbine, a trapper , in 44 mag... I had an 8 3/8s 629 with white outline and red ramp fronts... (No my favorite set up) We were both surprised that 100 pace and beyond shots were easier with the S&W. Superior irons and half the barrel length...

Thanks all! Good answers. I neglected to mention this wasn't
d&Td by the factory for a rear peep, but , that's what gunsmiths are for... It does have the angle eject mount holes, but I won't scope it...

The XS and Skinner mount into those rear holes on top of the receiver for a scope base. Williams has a 5 D or FP that uses those holes as well.
My AE trapper 45 colt currently has XS sights, and my home made 30-30 trapper is wearing a steel Redfield. It is really too big for the rifle and am looking to replace it with something smaller down the road. The XS really isn't my favorite sight I have it on a few rifles and don't do my best work with them. I think it is more a function of the white line front than anything else.
Personally I like a serrated black front post with a mid size apreature. It is the best of both worlds for me. skinner makes a nice front sight that resembles a Clements when looking at it,
Rob, I have a Skinner on my .45 Colt '94 AE.
Just a little fussy to adjust but rock-solid when done. Miss Melodie used it to great effect in 2015 to end the career of the "were-pig".
Tried to take a picture but my camera batteries died. It looks just like this one => http://www.skinnersights.com/winchester_26.html
I did end up with a taller front with an 'ivory' bead and also opted for the rear sight blank which is tapped to hold an extra aperture or to hold the one removed to allow for a 'ghost ring' type shot.
We've been quite pleased with this set-up.
HEY ROB! McCAIN DID USE HIS SIGHTS...
... occasionally.
Remove the white line and blacken the sight for a good post.

I have tried it and the smooth. Face reflects too much light. Nothing to my eyes comes close to a post front cut 75-80 degrees with serrations.

Check whether XS is still making their "cowboy" sights
They used to make a set that fit the existing front and rear, and was legal by CAS rules.
Front dot, rear line down middle of revamped blade sight, sort of a modified version of their typical "dot the i" handgun sights.
This would be great for quick short and medium range, which is where the 30-30 shines, but not so much for long distance shooting.
Ok, so cutting the face of the sight might not be a cost
effective solution...

I think can be done, but since someone makes them already it would probably be easier to just buy a new one for a few dollars.
My Bowen 500 has the white line sights and while they are great for lower light I have never been able to shoot my best with them. I talked to Alan about milling down the face of th eblade and serriating it, but never had it done.

Thread files will cut serrations pretty quickly. You just need to pick a pitch and slowly cut straight across the sight face keeping repeated cuts in the same grooves. Maybe practice on the edge of a piece of scrap would be useful.
This popped up on Amazon but I expect Brownells or any industrial tool supply will have them as well. https://www.amazon.com/Nicholson-Thread-Restoring-Square-Metric/dp/B000LEGYPK/ref=pd_si...
I only selected this as an example. In fact, I didn't even note the thread pitch so I couldn't say if it was too fine or too coarse.

That is a great idea. I bought a file for serrating years ago but it is too fine for what I wanted. I need to pick up something more suitable.

how many LPI is your checkering file Jared? I've got a 40 LPI checkering file on the way.
I've been making do with what I've got all my life, so it
is my default thought. Yeah, a new one is probably better.

I am thinking it is a 40 LPI. I got it from Midway or Brownells at least 10 years ago. My biggest issue is it doesn't cut the serrations deep enough to be effective. I have attempted to cut the notches a little deeper with a different file but that didn't work for me.
I really think a 30 or Mayberry even a 20 would be better for a front sight. My Baer has what is probably a 20 LPI from the sight. It is very aggressive but sure is visible. .
I've been making do with what I've got all my life, so it
I understand that. I would be happy replicating the Garand sight picture on most of my rifles wearing aperture sights. They'd just work for me.
Gotcha...
I nearly ordered a 50 but thought the better of it. Mine will be used primarily for handgun sights unless the Missus wants the front sight done on her 16" Golden Boy.
Swiss Grobet #0 serrating file, 30 LPI works for me.
You still need to cut them to depth to point up.
