Last weekend report….
First time I shot my Les Baer PII/Custom Carry that I bought 3-4 years ago, even installed a new rear sight last summer and still never got around to shooting it. With a Sierra blem 185 JHP over 6.1 grs of 231 it will chew the X out of the center of a target with ease and the new rear sight was dead on, got lucky with that one. And yes even being a tight fitted 1911 there were ZERO issues shooting it, gotta love Baers. And for the nay sayers who complain about Baer 8 round mags, they worked just fine also.
Second first……finally got to shoot the SPR AR I built a few months back. Had issues at first, little freaked out I was, never had problems with a AR before but this is one I built. Start running the build thru my head trying to see if I screwed up somewhere, nothing came to mind, everything looks right! Then came another first….Pmag issue, switched mags, most of the issue went away but not 100% still. The BCG phosphate coating was a little gritty, drowned the BCG with oil and hand cycled the action and tried again, BINGO, everything works 100%.
Back to the mag issue, this was a brand new 10 round Pmag, and was only loading 5 rounds at a time, I like short mags for bench work so I picked one up to try out. The spring feels really tight and heavy, think I will load to full capacity and let it sit a few weeks and see if that helps, have 30 rounders and they are go to good so this was odd to me.
This weekend….
Completed the SPR build with a new home built lower using a Anderson stripped receiver, BCM LPK and a Luth AR adjustable stock on a A2 rifle receiver extension.
Went shooting today to test the complete build with a new nickel boron coated BCG and that is where everything went belly up again…..I get one bang then click, look and see the bolt hasn’t fully rotated and is hung up on the barrel extension. OK maybe this home built crap is not for me
If I pull the charging handle fully to the rear and let go it seems to rotate and feed but I only get one bang, I hand cycle the action and try again, same thing, after about 10 hand feeds I give up.
Lucky for me, at the last moment before I walked out the door I grabbed the phosphate BCG and brought it along. Switched BCG’s and I get bang, bang, bang. OK maybe I can build AR’s My heart slows back to normal and I can breath again. Not sure what the heck is going on with the new BCG, never have seen nor heard of this kind of issue. Will contact the builder/seller and see what they say. While I haven’t taken the BCG apart I wonder if the gas rings are buggered up or if there is a bur of some kind on the tail of the bolt or inside of the carrier that is retarding the bolt from turning. Miles any thoughts?
Once I had a 100% running AR and breathing normally I started shooting at 100 yards to do final scope adjustments and see what the barrel is capable of, though I had only a small selection of ammo with me, mostly surplus type and general Black Hills ammo, no match ammo. The BH ammo didn’t do as well as I thought it would, previous AR’s I have had shot it really good. But the bench is getting crappy (wood) and not at the right height so I didn’t have the most stable platform to shoot from. The Centurion brass cased surplus I picked up a few years back shot decent, got a one inch 5 shot group with it. PMC Bronze did about 1 ½- 1 3/4 inches about the same as the BH ammo. Need to build a new, correct height bench and shoot so more groups.
Before I finished for the day I decided to do one more first……I pulled the Baer PII/Custom Carry and let loose with a few rounds at 65 yards with it. Made the 1/3 scale IPSC steel target ring fairly easy, have I ever said I love Baers

Gas system issue in BCG
Look or feel for an obstruction in that short tube... I know, you probably already did this...

BCG.......
I pulled apart the BCG, no blockages in gas key, 3 rings on bolt tail, no mars or burrs on anything that I can see, bolt slides/rotates by hand smoothly. I think the issue is with the side charger upper receiver, it seems I had a major brain fart and forgot the BCG cam pin needs replaced with a special cam pin to be able to cycle the bolt, weird that the new BCG cycled by hand without but think the carrier may be hanging up on the lever of the charging handle. Will test this theory and bring along my M4 lite weight to test the new BCG in it as well.

I am sure you know to keep the gaps offset on the rings
don't align them...
