what is your impression of them? Thinking about making my next handgun purchase something like the new Ruger LW Commander in 9mm.

I had a Kimber 38 super that I converted to 9mm. Both performed very well. The 9mm was a pleasure to shoot and reduced practice ammo costs. I saw a Para with a non-ramped barrel that would hesitate while feeding soemtimes.

I built one many years ago. O wanted it to be a speed gun for steel. I was told I was wrong and now it is common to use 9mm for steel. I didn't put much time into it because all our clubs banned steel shooting just after I built the gun. They still recoil but are fun to shoot. J.Michael

I have shot my buddies Citadel 9 mm full size 1911 numerous times. I enjoyed it.....lite recoil, and fun to shoot.

I used to consider a 9mm 1911 a waste of my time. No longer.

with the onset of arthritis and the price of ammo, it makes perfect sense to me, now.

Ed Head reports that the first 9mm LWT Commander had a 13 pound factory spring; recoil and lack of reliability were notable. both were corrected with an 18 pound spring and matching firing pin spring (Of course)

I'm considering one for a carry gun...

I want a LW Commander for a carry gun and it's hard to consider something besides the 45, but it would be cheaper to shoot in 9mm, less recoil and, supposedly, 9mm is as good as 45. Not sure I fully buy the latter argument but the 9mm has ended the careers of many a bad guy.

I always wondered "why 9mm", think the answer was that people bought them in countries where .45ACP wasn't allowed.

For plinking of course it would be fine and easier to shoot than .45, and would have higher capacity. I still think if you want a 9mm auto you should get something like a Glock 19 or M&P9 but if a person wants a 9mm 1911 then they should get one.

Personally I have been real close to a 9mm 1911- I've been wanting a Kimber in 10mm. But I'd also like to try a Springfield in 460 Rowland.

Well, I just ditched my Glock 19 for a stainless CZ 75...

And I much prefer it over the Glock. I just like the ergonomics of the 1911 over everything else. I'm with you...I want one in 9mm, 460 Rowkand and 10mm to go with my 45. And I wouldn't mind an LAR Grizzly 45 Winchester Magnum either:)

9MM AND THE SPRINGFIELD ARMORY EMP4 9MM---BOTH EXCELLENT, EASY SHOOTING, AND TOP SELF-DEFENSE PICKS.

Thanks JT...

Sounds like both are a winning choice.

Many years ago I acquired a late-60s vintage Colt Commander in 9mm. For a lot of the years between then and now it was the only centerfire handgun I owned, and me and it went down some long roads together. We both show a good bit of wear now, but the old Colt is still a favorite of mine, and it would likely be one of the last handguns I would part with. As an EDC pistol, it is VERY hard to beat - light, compact, and with adequate power for most any reasonable purpose.

I now feed my old Commander from a carefully hoarded supply of Federal Nyclad HPs because they are one of the few hollow points that don't gouge the soft alloy feed ramp. If I ever HAD to replace it, a Ruger would probably get the nod because of the stainless/alloy construction and titanium feed ramp insert. I'm sure the Ruger would handle any of the new-generation 9mm loads that make the nine a much better defense round than it used to be.

The 9mm Ruger has a ramped barrel that should solve any HP issues reliably. I think the titanium insert on the feed ramp is the LW Commander 45. I'd love to have one of each:)

Honestly, I could probably do most of what needs doing...

with a 9mm, at least as far as handgun rounds go. I plan on getting back to reloading for the 9mm now that I have my CZ 75. My Glock 19 was seriously picky and didn't much care for my handloads and so I set them aside. The CZ sure likes 115 XTPs over 6 grains Unique and if I remember right that's the powder charge for the 124's and I just left it at 6 grains, rather than 6.5 because it worked for both weights and it's the same load I shoot under 230's in my 45 ACP loads. Happy coincidence there:)
