Removing rust from a nickel-plated Model 10?
Hi,
I am eyeing a nickel-plated Model 10 -- pre-lock, pre MIM, etc. The barrel, inside and out, is free of rust as is the grip frame, cylinder and cylinder slot. And it is mechanically sound.
HOWEVER, there is some "freckling" or splotches, on the left-hand slide plate and the opposite side of the revolver below the cylinder. No pitting, just rust. There is also rust on the hammer and trigger.
My question is, what means are there to safely remove the rust without causing peeling or flaking of the nickel finish? There is a local gun shop that offers ultrasonic cleaning -- would that be OK and not harm the finish? Or can I do it myself?
