Rossi 92 .357 mag. thoughts?
by woody, Sunday, July 03, 2016, 19:56 (3053 days ago)
I bought a Rossi 92 in .357 mag. recently. I really like it so far. Needs a little improvement but is a good shooter the little I've shot it. I think I will get one of the peeps that replaces the safety and maybe replace the springs and do some polishing inside. It has slicked up a little from me just working the lever a bunch.
What's everybody else think of their Rossi? Any work recommended to make them better? Thanks.

I bought a Rossi 92 in 44 Magnum a couple of years ago. Got the safety replaced with a peep sight and it works very well shooting jacketed or cast bullets. I mostly shoot either 240 or 260 grain bullets. The action does slick up nicely with use. No complaints from me so far and I have shot it a lot.
love mine - shot way low and I replaced the sights

Definitely slicked up with lubing and use. I have been happy with it after I changed the sights. Haven't seen the need for anything else to be done.

The action slicked up fairly good with some oil and working the action at lot. Once I get it loaded, it functions fine with 357 ammo, but when ejecting the fired case, it does put a little nick/dent in the case mouth. Accuracy is good with the factory sights, good enough for my use. However, loading is my problem: the loading gate sometimes does not want to depress due to being hung up with a sharp edge on the rim of the cartridge already in the tube; also the edge of the port is sharp and needs a beveling to allow the cases to slip into the tube without catching on the rim; sometime I have to giggle with a cartridge to get it to go into the tube. Same problem with loading 38 special ammo, with the added occasional event of a cartridge popping up and out of the action when cycling to load a round into the chamber. That load is with a short 125 gr bullet, the same bullet that does fine in 357 cases. I have also tried 158 gr WFN 357 loads the shoot great. Oh, the 38 special loads also shoot great. I haven't had any work done to solve the loading problem because I haven't decided to keep the rifle because I have 32/20 LA rifles that serve the same purpose. That's all I can think of right now, hope it helps.
I have some trouble with my loading gate too

Shot with a man who had one he bought cheap off the used shelf . Shot stock cast 158's into a tiny group at 100 yds . Run a tight patch down the bbl and ck for bbl restriction at the threads into the action. My 44 had a very bad restriction and I fire lapped it in and now it is a shooter.I put a marbles tang on mine. If you are lucky enough to find a spare firing pin buy it . It is a weak link on gun and will break and hard to find. I made one for my gun. It is ugly but it works. If I find one in 357 I would buy it just in the hope it would be as accurate as my friends. My .357 is an older model and has been with me for several years. I read Jim Taylor's article and slicked it up following his direction. It's very slick and has fired thousands of rounds. My boys like shooting it with light 158 gr .38 loads and it performed wonderfully on my first two deer with my cast 195 gr swc-gc Bullets from an NEI mold. A year or so back, I took it to a buddy who is making great strides at gunsmithing. He pulled the barrel, shortened it to 18" and threaded it for my 9mm can. He also installed a rear sight from XS for a Winchester 94. I made a taller front sight and it's a better hunting rifle and a lot of fun to shoot wth my 9mm can and .38 loads!
A 'bragging group' with some 180 wfn's
I will second the notion. Doug's '92 is slick and FUN!!

The main thing was slicking it up. And, just running the action some coupla-three hundreds, with lube in it, will give a good enuff smooth-out, that it is much improved.
Sights are adequate, but the guys here can steer you to sights that take better advantage of it's true accuracy.
Mine wound up as the 'locked in case' car gun , for general travel. It's compact and can stow inconspicuously.
anyway,, pretty much what other folks have found and improved....as above.

I do want to put a different read sight. Maybe a peep but I noticed it today she. Adjusting the sight it has two holes drilled and tapped underneath the rear sight. I need to measure the spacing and see what's available.
Thoughts?
