I was out at the local sportsaman's club this afternoon, and when I was leaving for home, I saw a lump in the middle of the two lane asphalt road. Thinking it's a dead raccoon I didn't give it a good look till I was right next to it.
It wasn't a dead critter, as a matter of fact it was a tiny whitetail buck fawn, couldn't be a day or so old.
He was flattened out on the pavement, obviously mamma told him to lay flat and don't move.
I grabbed a dusty towel from my truck so I wouldn't put human scent on him, and used it to pick him up and examine him. He appeared to be unhurt, so I laid him down in the grass on the far side of the ditch.
He went flat to the ground like he was before.
Cute little bugger, this is the earliest I've ever a seen a fawn, they seem to drop the second or third week in June around here.

I drove back by there a 1/2 hour later, and he was gone. Momma came back to get him I guess.

Excellent job, hope he stays safe and his Ma keeps him from 'playing' in traffic again in the future. My folks saw their first fawn of the year at the cottage almost two weeks ago, by far the earliest we have ever had one show up. They normally arrive around the first of June, give or take 3 or 4 days.

You did good! I found one along side a trail in the Blue Mountains one time. He was a good ten feet off the side so I didn't touch him. Came back to check on him a while later and he too was gone. Never saw the mom.

Well done!

Having an encounter like that doesn't happen too many times in a person's life, I'm glad I had the chance to help the little feller, he obviously was in the wrong spot, (being in the middle of the road) when Momma gave the alarm call.
