3rd Armored, 1/48, Gelnhausen...Fulda Gap 'stopper in the cork for 24 hours'. Best Bn CO ever: Lt Col John W Swaren -- still kicking and an avid fast sports car connoisseur. Best Bn Sgt Major ever...who kept a young NCO fellow from falling into a bad situation. I owe much to the experience of that time.

Do you remember the Beach Jumpers name? nt

What branch of the service and when did you serve?
I didn't. Came of age after the draft was abolished and before registering for the draft was re-instated. My son, though, at 25 years old and with a college degree joined the Marines and went to Parris Island in January. He signed up for 6 years specifically to get into the infantry. Said he wanted to do something hard. His mother, and my wife, went through medical school and was one of the doctors in Liberia 2 summers ago battling Ebola. I think he's trying to keep up with his mama. Both of them are my heros.
Do you remember the Beach Jumpers name? nt
Sorry, no I don't, but that guy could rig a tape recorder and projector onto a PBR that made every VC/NVA in the province take pot shots at us!

How about a fleet of ships
from an 8 foot dingy and aluminum foil?
Keep em guessing
Sadly, I never served, but Uncle Sam had me in mind....
.......pulled a low number in 1973, figured I was going to tour an exotic country all expenses paid. The Peace Accords were signed, so the gummint lost interest in me.
I had been giving thought to enlisting in the Army, so I had a better chance of getting a desirable MOS, but signed up with the US Postal Service for what I figured was going to be a couple of years until I decided what I really wanted to do. While I was floundering around, 32 years passed by, then I was forced into retirement. Now I'm losing money farming and working part-time in a gunshop. Never claimed to be too smart, and it shows.
If I could do it all over, and knew then what I know now, I'd have skipped the PO and gone straight into the Army. I have nothing but respect for those who served.

Ooo....AC130. That's the stuff. Any fav stories? NT

Otony, A friend and I were in the first draft lottery
I got #277, and he won the lottery with #1.
He was called for a physical, and was graded USDA Prime.
But he was never drafted.
After so many years, I honestly don't recall what.......
........what my number was, but it was two digits.
Is there a place where we can look it up? Now I'm curious.
Otony
Found it.....
.......and it was 042, but I'm off a year, they pulled our numbers in March of 1974.
They canceled the induction process in June of 1973, which was how I missed the draft. After so many years I confused the two events.
