Why, Ruger, Why?

by ~JM~, Tuesday, May 17, 2016, 18:49 (3100 days ago)

Just received my issue of American Handgunner.

Skimmed through the article on the Ruger GP100 now chambered in .22LR.

Just can't see the logic in such a beefy, heavy, revolver in .22LR.

I suppose it's not as much of a stretch as the Freedom Arms Model 83 in .22LR, but still.... :-|

Why, Ruger, Why?

Prolly because Smith & Wesson has the 17 series of revolvers.

will people buy it if ammo is not available?

by bj @, Tuesday, May 17, 2016, 19:33 (3100 days ago) @ ~JM~

I think the K-frame is a good platform for .22LR although the 617 with full underlug barrel is pretty heavy. I wonder if the FA83 came from people shooting IHMSA. It would be really heavy with those tiny little holes drilled in it.

I remember many years ago the Colt Trooper was available in .22LR. I thought that was a little larger than needed. OTOH the Colt Diamondback is just about perfect in .22LR.

I can't imagine people getting very excited about new models in .22LR considering how difficult or impossible it is to find ammo.

Why Not!

Six months ago you could not touch a 617 on Gun Broker for less than $950-$1000 + shipping. Now you can pick one up for $650 BNIB or a GP100 for $575. Its amazing what a little competition in the marketplace will do for the consumer. Me I'm happy with my $350 9 shot Taurus Tracker. The FA 252 is a specialized revolver, built for Silhouette matches for sure, but it will also take the head off of a sparrow or squirrel all day long at 50 yards. I can see using 9 or 10 shot revolvers with speed loaders in those 22 steel plate matches. As for 22lr availability they will come back (sans Hillary) but expect $25 or $30 a brick to be a bargain basement price. Compared to six months ago the local Wally World has a good selection of all ammo except for 22lr, a month back I hit it right, they had just received a shipment and had 100 round boxes of CCI stingers and CB's. I bought my 3 box limit and went back a few hours later after finishing my errands, as I expected, all were gone. Two weeks ago I couldn't believe my luck when I snagged the only pack of 1000 Winchester M22 for $50.84 and tax. Cabela's had a good selection of 22lr last time I was there, but there were at least 5 guys taking pictures and texting friends so I'm sure that shipment was decimated in a hurry. There are 22's out there if you hit the store at the right time. If Donald wins I think people will relax on the hoarding/panic mode buying and supplies will catch up with a more normal demand. If Hillary wins there won't be a gun or bullet left for sale by the time she takes the Oath.

Been A While Since I bought Any .22LR Ammo....

After reading a few posts about the lack of availability, I checked around locally.

I was sickened to pay $35 for a box of 500! Plus only one box per customer. Doesn't seem that long ago that every store that sold ammo had a wall full of 500 round boxes at $10 a box or less. Purchase as many as you could afford or carry.

Still think those "big" revolvers must feel very over-sized for shooting rimfire.

Thanks

If Hillary is elected our store will be devoid of all guns

by Hobie ⌂ @, Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Wednesday, May 18, 2016, 06:33 (3100 days ago) @ ERSisk

and ammo by COB Thursday. I expect the reloading stuff will be gone by that Saturday, high cap magazines, too.

NO REAL PROBLEM HERE. I CHECK CABELAS WEBSITE

by SIXGUNNER, Wednesday, May 18, 2016, 08:35 (3099 days ago) @ ~JM~

FREQUENTLY. THEY LIMIT TO 500 AT A TIME BUT IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS I PICKED UP 2500 CCIs (MM AND MMHP) AT $45 PER 500. FREE SHIPPING IF YOU PICK THEM UP AT THE LOCAL CABELAS; $10 SHIPPING IF NOT.

I have definitely transferred my gun money...

by rob @, Wednesday, May 18, 2016, 08:42 (3099 days ago) @ Hobie

To the ammo and component fund for the time being. I have all the firearms I need, not necessarily want, but if Hillary is elected I don't want to be gun rich and ammo poor and I'm none too confident about where this election will go.

Same here. Haven't had any problem getting .22's locally. A lot around now. Most the bulk stuff is running around $25 for 550's. Usually not the same brand but good supply. Bunch of the new Browning ammo around. Also a lot of CCI standard velocity around now. But is priced kind of high 9.99 for a 100 at the closest store.

Just a bit of a funny story from the shop. Monday I had

by Hobie ⌂ @, Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Wednesday, May 18, 2016, 19:51 (3099 days ago) @ ~JM~

a gentleman who bought a single 50-round box of Federal 40-grain solid high velocity. He said that this was the first box he had bought in 25-years and that it would probably last the rest of his life. His application? Critters in the garden. He didn't know there was a shortage and of the opinion it hadn't affected him at all (aside from tripling his cost from that of 4-5 years ago). It is all a matter of perspective, isn't it?

That is inexpensive compared to our area. Those prices

by Hobie ⌂ @, Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Wednesday, May 18, 2016, 21:13 (3099 days ago) @ woody

are very close to wholesale and way below MSRP. Nobody around here yet seems to be able to get quantities sufficient and certain enough to justify those prices. We can't even be certain of what loads will be available to us.

Drifting off topic a bit, while "pistol" powders seem to be more readily available in some areas, we don't seem to be able to get them.

Drifting a bit further we've been informed that the big box stores being 2/3rds of Ruger's business everyone else is getting only that part of production that Ruger can't get the big box places to buy. LCPs, forget about it. Very interesting...

Drifting yet further... Monday we had a couple of sales to self-identifying people of "another lifestyle". This seems to be a trend and, I think, one reason that McAuliffe got so much back blast on his and Herring's CHP reciprocity gambit. He is so out of touch he didn't realize he was hurting Hillary's base.

I got a case of Federal Match rimfire today at Bass Pro...

by Bryan Pettet @, Thursday, May 19, 2016, 18:22 (3098 days ago) @ SIXGUNNER

there was no limit and there was a lot of it. $20 per 325...about 6 cents a shot. Not horrible. I will get some more later and check Cabelas tomorrow to see what's there.

It's about time for a primer order too ahead of the election hysteria.

Cabelas had a decent supply as well today...

by Bryan Pettet @, Friday, May 20, 2016, 17:34 (3097 days ago) @ Bryan Pettet

I bought 5 bulk boxes of the new Browning target rimfire ammo. Cost was $25 per box of 400. No limit and plenty of it.

I will probably go back soon. Would like to have at least 10k rimfire on hand before the fall elections.
