Grinding sucks........

Haven't touched a knife in almost four months.......family, work and just needing a break from the knife business has keep me out of the shop. This week the desire to jump into it came back, been adding to a list of things to do in the shop the past few days, planning ahead due to the forecasted rainy weather all weekend. More than anything the purchase this week of two Made in the USA Damascus knife blanks spurred me to get off my arse.

Everything started off just fine, though I had forgotten how long the steps take, 3 hours just to rough out two sets of handle scales, make two pin sets, some sanding, then epoxy the parts and clamp everything together. The juices were flowing after all that so I got out the unfinished camp knife blank I rough ground last fall....

Worked on finishing the bevel grind, went from ok to not so ok to nothing is right back to ok but now I have thin spots and thick spots on the spine, that will take a few hours leaning over the grinder to surface grind everything back to flat, so I decided to shelf that blank and move onto something else. Next victim.....

Been wanting to do a full hollow grind on one of my big blade blanks and I just happened to have one on the shelf. Set up the big 10" wheel, grabbed a 36 grit belt and started grinding and that was my mistake, thinking I remembered how to properly setup for a hollow grind. About .200" too low on the work rest and 10 minutes later I have a nice pretty and completely ruined knife blank :-(

I mean completely, no coming back from that ruined, well I guess I could grind it to make a pare knife with a big handle :-|

No is the answer to that.

Grinding sucks! At this point the only thing keeping me from throwing ALL the grinding equipment out into the street is my excitement to finish the Damascus blanks tomorrow and I will need some of it to finish out the handle scales. The never ending battle of the knife grind continues.
