Drill it or fill it???????

Need a little of advice or choice concerning my M57.....

The roll pin in the grip frame that keeps the grip panels aligned is the smallest roll pin I have ever seen on a Smith. Typical problem with S&W target grips is the hole in the panels that goes over the roll pin gets enlarged which in turn allows the grip panel, usually the right side, to move slightly when pulling the trigger, gripping and/or firing. It is a issue that drives me completely crazy even if ever so slight hint of movement.

First thought was to clamp the frame in the mill, open the pin hole up and install a more robust roll pin.

Second thought was to wood putty the holes in the back side of the grip panels and re-drill them.

My concern is with the small roll pin is the problem will come back somewhere down the road if I use the fill method. My other concern is the hardened frame, while the new hole will only be slightly bigger could I still run into issues drilling it out?

Advice/choice.......drill or fill???????

Drill it or fill it???????

How about a sleeve epoxied into the wood?

That's a beautiful model 57...

I would not drill it. Work with the grips as Jimmy said. Maybe JD or Killebrew or another of our engineer types have a better solution. Just don't drill it!

It seems to me that there is a choice here. You are

going to put it away to preserve it OR you are going to shoot it. IF you shoot it the problem will worsen. A compromise is to use a very small amount of epoxy to reinforce the pin hole in the problem stock (right). That should be enough to prevent the hole from enlarging due to use. A tight fit between pin and stock will prevent a "run" at the hole in recoil and slow any possible damage, too.

Drill it or fill it???????

Drill out the holes in the stocks, fill with appropriate epoxy, drill out epoxy to fit snugly over the pin.
I've done it a few times and haven't had one loosen up yet.

Drill it to 44!

:-D n Nice 57 Gunner! I have done the epoxy fill and ONE, which one? of my sets of Herretts came with brash bushings...you could just bush that pin up a pit with a sleeve.

Drill it or fill it???????

Drill it using a flat bottomed drill and plug it with a matching walnut plug. Then redrill for pin.

Drill it or fill it???????

Only shoot it left hand and it won't drive you crazy. NO simple rule work on the least expensive part. Hardwood dowel epoxied into the grips and start over with a new hole. With your level of expertise You could you use aluminum dowel and never have the problem again. J.Michael

Thanks everyone......

I knew you guys would come up with some options better than drilling the frame. I am going to put JimmyP's idea to use, will let you know how it works out when done.
