I see that Cubrock and others are wanting one. I recently passed on a nice Shiloh in 45-120. I wasn't that concerned about the recoil but they seem to be a little hard to shoot consistently. You could say recoil but there's a lot going on in that long case of BP too. Consistency is important.

Who's into Sharps rifles? What do you have? Who wants one?

I really miss my Shiloh in 50-90. It was so beautiful. This photo was shot in Rob Leahy's yard in Alaska. We lived about 15 minutes away from each other.

It has upgraded wood, pewter forend tip, checkered steel shotgun buttplate, heavy half round half octagon barrel, and soule sights manufactured by a local machinist that does great work.... It's a BEAUTIFUL rifle... And, no Bryan, you can't have it.... :-D :-D

It also goes well with my 45-70 Browning Black Powder Cartridge Rifle. They are a great rendition of the Winchester 1885 falling block that Browning did an excellent job creating, with pretty wood, heavy half round half octagon Badger barrel, very good soule sights, set trigger, very nicely done but they don't seem to have the following that a Sharps has....

Smokeless loads with my cast bullets. Either Lyman 475 grain pointed spitzer or SAECO 540 grain semi-roundnose. It shoots quite well and lots of fun.... :-) :-)

A .50-90 Hartford model.

When I got it, and was shooting it a lot, I didn't mind it. It likes bullets in the 700 grain range, when I shot it often I didn't notice the recoil. Now it knocks me about a bit. Uses lead and powder in huge gulps. Might be too long, is too heavy to hunt with enjoyably. And in all honesty I don't know if I care for the Sharps design as much as I thought I would.

Plus to pay for it I sold two rolling blocks which I really miss (I found I like rolling blocks more than I thought.) I sold an M1 Garand, a SIG P226, my 50 Beowulf upper, a Mosin Nagant and a few other guns. I think 10 or 12 in total, some cheap ones, but it was the thought.

I was shooting black powder, casting and rolling paper patch bullets. Now I just don't seem to have the time. I don't think I've fired it in 2-3 years. And not all that much in the 2-3 years prior. I find myself wishing I'd gotten a smaller bore I could load smokless in.

A .50-90 Hartford model with a shotgun butt stock. I upgraded the wood a step or two. I don't recall the barrel length off the top of my head. 28 or 30? Dunno. I added an MVA midrange tang sight for it that makes it much more accurate, but to me, less enjoyable to shoot.

I went through Bill Goodman, paid the couple hundred extra to not wait a few years for it. Think it was in the $2800 range in 2007-2008? Which was more than I was expecting, sooner than I was expecting. I remember panicking to come up with the balance.

If you're not set on a Sharps, you might be able to talk me out of my Browning 1885 Traditonal Hunter in 45-70. I got it from Marty and I've never shot it, mainly because it is light enough that with my cast bullet long range loads I know it will kick the snot out of me. But hey, you LIKE rifles that kick the snot out of you.... I have it mainly to go with my 30-30 and 38-55 Traditional Hunters, which I really like and are FUN to shoot (and don't leave large bruises when you are done...).

Not in the same class as a Sharps, but still not a bad traditional rifle....

I won't say no but for me this is an emotional not logical purchase. I just like the Sharps. I don't need either of them of course.

Something like a 300 or 350 grain bullet at 1100 to 1200 fps. It should be fun with that type of load.... A 540 grain bullet at 1300 fps, not so much.....

the 50 Alaskan was 460's at 1900 out of the 20" barrel and weighed a lot less! Just think happy thoughts.

I have an 'Italian before they were good' copy of the 54 caliber paper cartridge Sharps. Decent looking on the outside, rough as a cobb on the inside. It still goes KA-BOOM! when you light it off. Haven't played with it for a couple of years but I think it'll go piggie chasing one of these years.

I was thinking of getting a Shiloh 1874 carbine in 45-70, but they don't make them anymore. :-( If I want a carbine I guess it will have to be an Eye-talian made one. :-|

I have always been fascinated by Sharps rifles, yours was a real looker! A friend has an original 50/70 cavalry carbine and it is a tremendous amount of fun to shoot, even if the trigger pull feels like it must be 100 lbs. Maybe someday I will have the money to acquire one of my own, but there is so much that needs my attention first.

I have Pedersoli 1874 Sharps replica in 45-70 (45-2.10). I installed Shaver Soule sights on it. It shoots great and is comfortable. I wanted a C. Sharps but due to cost, I went with the Pedersoli. I am happy with it. Truth be told, I just don't shoot it anymore. I considered selling it. It's a fun gun. Don't ignore the Pedersoli version.
