Talk to me about N frame grips...

by Bryan Pettet, Tuesday, January 26, 2016, 21:36 (3163 days ago)

One of my fav handguns is a stainless .44 Mtn gun. I've carried it for years with the old pachymar grips. Useful in inclement weather but ugly as sin.

This gun is an old friend and I would like to dress it up a touch. What are your thoughts on material and who should do the work?

right now my thought is I could go with a Miculek grip set. Those are available quickly and I like the shape and open backstrap. Plus it's only $85.

On the custom side, I'm not thinking ivory or most likely bone...the walnut options are generally my fav. Blu-Magnum is a maybe. Who else?

Something from Culina, maybe?

Wish I'd bought some from him before he became famous.

Miculek's can often be found at a decent discount second hand but unused. I love how they feel... As long as I don't have to actually shoot the gun. I've tried them on a few 625's and 627's shooting minor USPSA loads which tells me I sure wouldn't like them for the 44mag.

I have a couple sets of Nils that I really like, I just which they were cheaper.

To me though the Moauntain Gun asks for smaller grips. ive still stuck with then Compacs on my MG all these years.

Patrick Grashorn is my recommendation for stag (actually elk antler) grips.

Thanks Ken. NT

Patrick makes beautiful grips and is a gentleman to boot.

He made me a set of stags for a New Service years ago and they were (are) gorgeous.

Passed on to a son for posterity.

This fella sells over on GB.

No personal experience with his work but they sure look good.

Please let me know what you think when they arrive. I've been-a-gonna buy some but circumstances, as well as trying to decide which revolver, have conspired against me.

I certainly will. Thx again. NT

Those are nice, too.

Well, I got one of those from YOU! Still my favorite set.

Thank you so very much! Herrett's makes a nice set of Roper style stocks as well. I(f Scott Kolar did DA stocks, HIS walnut and work is fantastic.

Yep. I remember that set well - now that I am reminded. :)

I second the Deluxe Walnut Herrett grips

by JD, Western Washington, Wednesday, January 27, 2016, 17:38 (3162 days ago) @ Rob Leahy

I have Herrett Jordon Trooper grips in deluxe walnut on my 629 Mountain Revolver and my 625 Mountain revolver. Beautiful and help soak up the recoil too....

If you are going to shoot mainly single action I'd go with the Jordon Troopers, If you're going to shoot double action too, then maybe the Roper design is better. Herrett makes beautiful grips.....

You just need to let me borrow a set...

by Bryan Pettet, Wednesday, January 27, 2016, 21:57 (3162 days ago) @ JD

I bought some elk grips tonight for it. They need a nice set of wood too. You know how I hate backlogs!

by JD, Western Washington, Wednesday, January 27, 2016, 22:41 (3162 days ago) @ Bryan Pettet

You're welcome to borrow a set if you to try them, but they are a exact tight fit to my frames (I had to do some minor fitting but now they fit absolutely perfectly ), so they might not fit your frame. ...

Of course, you can always come up to the great northwet and try them out on my guns...

it's been awhile...

unfortunately I don't fly through Seattle like I used to. I miss the chowder and our visits.

This may be sacrilege around here, but what about something in G10 or Micarta? I like the look of the darker colors of G10 on a stainless gun. They would give you a good grip in various weather condition, still be durable as all heck and look a ton better than rubber grips.

VZ makes good quality grips and they aren't prices too bad. Available smooth or checkered (tactical diamond; ha!)

I don't like finger grooves. Plus my guns aren't exposed to a lot of weather these days. Thanks!

Glue and plastic don't go round here Kansas Lawdog!

I like these Eagle elk grips. I run them with a Tyler T, but apparently I don't have a pic of that.
