Reloading the 45 ACP
Decided to start loading the ACP since I have the cylinder for my Ruger Bisley 45 Colt and a large sack of once shot brass. I now load a 250 Gr hard cast with 9 Gr of Unique and wish to duplicate point of impact if possible with a 230 Gr jacketed round. I have Unique, Hp-38, Power Pistol, Tight Group and 2400 powders. I believe I am getting about 900 FPS with my 45 Colt load. Any ideas how I can come close to duplicating this load. I understand I can load the ACP more heavy in the Bisley. Is this correct?
Thanks

Here's a good place to start:

I didn't spend a lot of time looking at the powders but good data. Near 900fps with 230's. With the revolver, you also aren't limited to round nose which opens a few doors for a fella.

HP38/231 is my go to powder for 45 ACP and you should be able to achieve your desire with it, working up carefully. Unique and lots of others will work too, see John's writeup linked above.

For a lighter bullet to him the same place as a heavier bullet it needs to go slower to allow the bullet more dwell time in the barrel. I'd start with HP38 and try for 800fps and it should be close.

I use 6gr of unique, it is a tad dirty but a little goes a long way, it gives me about 870fps from a 1911.

That sounds like a winner. Thank you and to all who responded. Hope to run into you some time at Green Mountain,

Same here...
That is my go-to load with 230 cast or jacketed bullet. HS6 is a good powder too but Unique gives more for less and is every bit as accurate in my guns.

Yup I wouldn't mind chewing the fat with you either but how would I know if I ran into you at Green Mountain? I drop by once or twice a week on my way home to see what new and interesting they might have.

Oh and 4.8gr of HP38 and a cast 230gr bullet should be close to 800 at least it is in my 1911s, might need a touch more with a revolver and/or jacketed bullets.

I am the old guy wearing a cap with the Wyoming Cowboy on it. I too am in there about once a week.
