Cylinder throat reaming - 45 Blackhawk

by stonewalrus, Friday, November 13, 2015, 20:54 (3286 days ago)

I picked up a used Ruger New Model Blackhawk 1970s vintage. Accuracy has been disappointing. I fear it has tight cylinder throats. Suggestions on who I can get to do it? I looked at buying the reamer tool but for a one time deal $100+ seems a bit much.

Cas' cylindersmith.com was my first thought but though it came up on all of the search engines, none would open, the little blue wheel just kept spinning until the pop-up filter kicked-in.....the website must not be active.......

They say that Bowen feller over in Louisville is a fair-to-middlin' gun fixer, but I imagine he has quite a waiting list.....

Cylinderhone.net is in NC and has a good reputation. I haven't had them work on Ruger's but probably will when I get around to it...Their webpage is under construction but he's active on Facebook.

I stopped about a year and a half ago.

Had enough stress, enough frustration. I grew to dread the thought of doing them. I truly miss the extra gas money, but I'd had enough.

What area do you live?

If you're in Washington maybe we can get together and do them with my reamers...

Unfortunately I am in Tennessee

may regret it but I went ahead and ordered a reamer

I really don't want to ship off the cylinder and wait months to get it back and am having trouble finding someone to do it. The catch 22 is the better the gunsmith the longer the waiting period.

Don't mean to be a wet blanket...

but some of the early .45's suffered from over-sized throats. My convertible has .456" +/- throats but it does fairly well with .454 (or larger) bullets. Hopefully, yours will benefit from reaming/uniforming.

I know that a cast bullet will drop right through 2 chambers

But not the others.

Tom, you might ought to number those chambers and do some shooting off a bench to determine WHICH chambers shoot away from the group before you crank up the throat reamer. Could be the tight ones or it could be the loose ones that are causing the problem.

The Pulaski trip isn't too far away I can try and even take

The reamer along depending what I see.
