Alliant Powder substitutes?
I got my first notification for 2400 from Midway Thursday morning saying 8 pound bottles were in stock. I was in a conference and immediately went into purchase mode to find it was probably all sold before their email notification even went out. I've been trying to buy 2400 since the Newtown shooting ammo hoarding began and haven't seen a single granule of it for sale. I have a decent supply of Unique and only about two pounds of 2400. If Alliant powders are gonna be this hard to come by, I guess I'm ready to find some Hodgdon substitutes. It can't be that danged hard to produce enough 2400 to meet the demand. I've had no problem getting whatever Hodgdon powders I want. So anyhow, I have H110 for heavy loads but I'd like something to replace the mid loads in 44 Mag and .357...maybe 1000-1100 FPS range with accuracy that works well with jacketed and cast bullets. I've got lots of HS6 but really haven't tried it seriously in .357 or .44. I can read a loading manual but mainly looking for powders in general you guys might find useful for medium loads or in the 2400 burn rate. Thankee:)
Alliant Powder substitutes?
I have both of those magazines...
I remember them both...that's a big help, thank you:) I forgot all about my years of Handloader and Rifle Magaine subscriptions. I dropped them a couple years ago but I have a couple decades of them right beside me in this file cabinet I use for a night stand. I should revisit them!
My pleasure
Enjoy!
Longshot and HS7
Those appear to be the closest Hodgdon products. HS6 is not too far down the list as is Herco.

Are the loads that you want beyond what you can do with Unique?
I have enough Unique...
to last a good while. If it isn't on the shelf by then I can find some good substitutes for that like maybe Power Pistol. I just want a good 2400 substitute. It's so good for medium to full throttle .357 and .44 loads I hate not being able to replace it.

I like HS6 & AA-9, works for me. WC820 in the surplus market is also good. For 357 mag 1000+ fps I usually use HS6, AA-9 for a little more fps.

I love WC820...I used to use it in .45 Colt and now use it for .44 Magnum. I have a couple 8 pounders of it. I have a bit of HS7 left from years ago too. I may play with it and HS6 both and see what works best for medium loads. Years ago I remember a rumor they were gonna quit making HS7...or maybe it was one of the 4227's? Guess it was just a rumor:)
Maybe it wasn't a rumor...
Looking at the Hodgdon web sight I don't see HS7 or H4227 listed anymore.
Maybe it wasn't a rumor...
IMR 4227 was listed when I looked a couple of days ago.
I saw the IMR 4227 but not Hodgdon
I played with 4227 a bit in the past in the .45 Colt but didn't care for it because I got better performance in heavier loads using H110 and 2400 and for mild loads it wasn't as economical as Unique. I did like HS7 a lot in the .45 Colt. I wonder why they dropped it. I've tried to settle on just a few loads for .38/.357, .44 Magnum and .45 ACP over the last several years and found Unique, 2400, HS6, H110 and Lil'Gun pretty much covered everything but 2400 was my most used powder. It stinks not being able to get my hands on it today.
