Is there any such thing as a 30-30 defense load?
I have a "Searschester" 94 I was thinking of leaving out where I could get to it (only paid $100 and no sentimental value) but live in a subdivision. Looking online the only thing I could find even close is an outfit that makes rubber bullet ammo.
Is there any such thing as a 30-30 defense load?
I saw some Remington 125 grain ammo at BassPro.
Every Load is a self defense load in a 30-30... You just
need to decide how much penetration your back stop will stand up to...

LeveRevolution ammo
The line of ammo uses a very good bullet design for SD. Not sure if they make it in 30-30, but if so, its GTG.
I'd go with varmint loads rather than ones for big game...
But that's just me
I have an opinion! I really think that the 125 gr Sierra HP
is the bullet to use and I do believe Federal had a load using it. EVEN if it is the reduced recoil load (no I didn't look it up before posting) it would be dang good maybe even better if it is the reduced recoil load.
PS - I knew Federal had at least one such load. Remington has a reduced recoil load but my limited experience with this bullet would indicate that it might not be the best choice but would work depending on what you're defending against (of course).

I've seen a few people who were shot with them. Any 150 grain soft-point will work fine. You're liable to get through & through penetration, but it's damned unlikely you're going to need to shoot him a second time.
I'm just afraid there will be WAY too much penetration.

If you ever shoot a .30-30 inside a structure, you will need a really good set of hearing aids from then on.
Just get another 10/22 and load it with Mini-Mag hollow points. They are reliable and not very expensive.
Years ago my BIL worked with a fellow who dispatched...
...a bad guy who broke in through his apartment window in NYC. Shot him with a lever action 30-30 with a Remington Accelerator load. Apparently sent him to the big fire escape in the sky rather handily. Don't think they make those anymore do they?
We still have several boxes at the shop...

I have a box that has been sitting behind the seat of my
Pickup for 15 or so years. Not sure how reliable they would be now. Also with the pointed tip they probably wouldn't be safe in a Winchester 94 would they?
I don't think that they will recoil enough to set off a
primer. There's been a lot of study on the subject and it seems to me that the risk of catastrophic destruction is much lower with certain cases loaded with smokeless than it was with a .45-70 Government round loaded with BP.

It's still an issue with heavy 45-70 loads
That was the reason BBA used small rifle primers for theirs.
You have at least one Mini 14... why would you use anything
besides having an extra,,,

Tom, where you live, a lever action .30-30 doesn't work well as a house gun. Too many houses around close. There are lots of cheap beater shotguns to be had that will work better. and be safer to boot. Even a Marlin .22 auto would do for that duty. The one that sits behind my bedroom door is one of the old M2 carbine versions. $110 otd at Tim's pawmshop, and it is accurate and reliable as long as it's fed good ammo. Got an SKS carbine handy, but it's for outside.

With a youngun in the house I was figuring I could run a cable through a pump shotgun action anchored to a wall stud and still have rounds up the tube. Would be hard to have a decent cable through a 22.

I have a partial box of those in 30-06. Kind of sliped my mind. Used them back in the 70's when the 30-06 was the only center fire I had and had to use it for every thing. Shot a small female coyote (ky-oat) in the neck and just about took her head off. Don't think I will ever use them again since I now have better rifles for that type of hunting.
