Philosophical question: How many pistol magazines are enough
by stonewalrus, Thursday, July 16, 2015, 19:33 (3406 days ago)
I like having at least 4 for every one I own. I have probably twice that many for my M&P Compact but half are compact mags and the other full size.
7 is a nice number, but I am constantly buying new mags

and rotating out old mags. I also use mostly the same models of guns...`

I have the three that came with my Sig M11-A1, three for my M&P Compact two with the pinky rest and one flat bottom and two for my LCP. Hope that is enough.

I like having ten or more. It's convenient to keep several loaded for carry use and have some for practice
More is better but I would say that the absolute minimum

is 3, 9 makes me feel better, 18 makes me feel safe in the idea that I can feed the pistol for certain. I have better than that for the 1911s, about that for the S&W 422, 6 for the 1911-22, 3 for the 938-22, about that for the MK-II, better than that for the AR, hmmmmm... I sure do like the revolvers, tube fed and such.
PS - this is based on what I feel one should carry, normally, when using the pistol in "the field" and that is 3 (1 in the gun and 2 reloads).

Things feel "right" when I have at least a dozen......

......IF the pistol in question is a centerfire. If it is a rimfire or a pistol that has no possibility of ever being used for serious social purposes (like my Mauser Luger in 7.65 Parabellum) then I am content with somewhere between four to six.
Don't ask how many M16 or M14 mags I own though, even I'm not sure if I know. Let's just say LOTS and leave it at that.

I think a person should have more than they can carry
Oh well, then I'm good.....

an advantage of having an AR15 vs a mini 14 with pricier mag

I use 10 as a base figure.
Between one and twenty seven?

Before I started playing "gun games", I was happy with 2 per gun. Some I had just one.
When I started shooting USPSA, 3Gun etc. things changed. My home range is all beach sand. I take 19 1911 mags to a match. I believe I have 27 CZ75 mags, though I don't bring them all.
Though I did learn my lesson with AR mags. Being in a ban state, I bought every pre-ban AR mag I could find for 20 years. Everyone is buying new for $12-15, we were buying well used for $15-$35. And over night they became illegal too. I ended up selling them for about $3-5 a piece. I was constantly finding them in the house. I just started giving them away to MA residents. In the end it was just easier to throw them away when I'd find them.

For carry, one in the gun and 1 or 2 spare. For field use, not CCW, as many as I can carry. Have 9 or more for every semi-auto handgun and rifle, except for a few old 22lr's.
Gonna take the 5th on that one, Your Honor.
by MR, Friday, July 17, 2015, 17:49 (3405 days ago) @ stonewalrus
Depends on the purpose of the pistol.
I only have two for my High Standard Sport King.
I have no idea how many 1911 magazines I have. But far more than two jeans pockets full.
Same with BHP mags, but less than 1911's.
Same with Sig mags.
Same with Glock 19 & 17 mags.
About 6 for my M-469
It depends more on finding closeouts and sales than a target number.
Gonna take the 5th on that one, Your Honor.

Same here. I have no idea how many 1911 and Glock .45 mags I have, but it's "several". I don't think one can have too many rifle mags; I'm wishing I'd bought a whole pallet of FAL mags back when good ones were $5 each. I probably have somewhere north of 30 AR mags on hand, and I'm not *that* fond of those.
Questions like this make me appreciate revolvers even more.

Of late, that's all I've carried...

.357 LCR and 4" GP100 and a Simply Rugged ammo pouch. Simple, reliable, more comfortable and I just shoot them better.
And revolver magazines never wear out!

Just yesterday I made an order of some more Magpul AK mags and a couple of G17 mags long with some other stuff from Primary Arms. I e got a good number of AR mags, but having a half dozen AR's around it breaks down to not too many per rifle!
AIMSurplus had a good deal on S&W M&P used mags but I was too late and all were gone.

I have 9 or 10 for my M&P Pro & 4 for my Compact. I have two 1911's & I'd have to count those.
