So the Professor walks in the other day....

...he is one of our regular customers, teaches biology at Whitman College here in Walla Walla. He, like most of us here, is a fan of older iron and brings in stuff from time to time for consignment. He is also a pretty fair machinist and gunsmith.

Lo and behold, this visit he walks in with a long gun case in hand.

"Whutcha got?" sez I.

"Late model 1897 Winchester" sez he.

I look it over, and easily rate it as between 85 to 90%. Good, honest gun.

"If it is a 1955, I will buy it myownself" sez yours truly. We can all guess what year I'm born, right?

Son of a gun! It IS a 1955! I will have to get pics up toot sweet. BTW, years ago I passed up a NIB 1955 1897 at a gun show for lack of funds. Killed me that did. I swore I would have a clean '55 example someday in lieu thereof. Oh, $400 American. Not shabby for a clean hammer pump, eh?

I saw the NIB 1897 I mentioned quite a few years back. The asking price at the time? $400! It was not a bad deal then.

So wait 20 years, pay the same, and get a 90% 1897. In all honesty, I think I did okay.

Now if a 1955 dated Marlin 39 or 336 were to come along..........

Bought my only birth year gun in December

I'm plumb fool about S&W's. Been waiting for sometime and stumbled onto a nice, clean six inch K-38 just about Christmas on Gunbroker. Yep, bought myself a Christmas present :) (Vintage 1953)

As an added extra, the first shots I fired from it were at CSA this year.

Bein' as my birth year is 1944...

it's kinda tough finding civilian guns made that year. Closest I got is a late 1943 Inland carbine.

1944 is my birthyear as well. The only thing I have made that year is me, and I am wearing out.

I was born in '52. I have a twin brother to remind me.
