K38 S&W

Those who know me also know I'm a man of few guns. I tend to shoot the same old stuff over & over. But even as few I have some aren't shot for long periods of time. Barbara & I were out today & she was shooting my 17-4. Once home I wiped the little sixgun down & decided to switch the grip panels as the standard target stocks were a little large for her. In the safe I removed the 38 from its perch & switched stocks between the two revolvers.

Well I couldn't bring myself to place the 38 back in the safe so upstairs it came with me. From what I understand it's a K38 Heavy Masterpiece with a non-tapered wide rib barrel made in 1951. It's a good shooter & worth what a shooter is worth. I have no box or papers or anything else.

Took this in poor light.

What it does have though are the things I love on these sixguns. The first thing done was to open the rear sight notch to allow some extra light in. Then a standard trigger was installed with the serrations polished out.

I love the target hammer but they are too long for me so one was cut in half & installed.

Sure love this sixgun. A man was walking though a local gun show with it & I asked what the price was. He said 300.00 & after a few minutes it was mine. This little gun does well on the steel plates or the bullseye. Fits on the bed stand & gives peace of mind through the night. Need to get it out more.

Nice gun Lynn...nothing like having it fit-up just the way you want it.

That's a dandy K38...

I have an Outdoorsman that I am rather fond of as well. Those older S&Ws are pure class!

The 22 would have a bunch more through it if I could get shells. I've been able to find a buy now & then on higher quality shells so I've laid several of them up for the Anschutz & CZ but need to try a few in the M17.

I remember you shooting the 22 there in Pa. & said that was as tight as you could hold. Well if I'd had better ammo the groups would have been tighter.

Some years ago I found a 1949-vintage K-38 in a bunch of guns a dealer friend had picked up at a police auction. It was the saddest-looking thing I have ever seen - almost no finish left. Seemed OK mechanically, though, and my dealer buddy priced it to me for $110.

The first cylinder full of Federal wadcutters went into one ragged hole at 15 yards and I was hooked. Ended up sending it back to the S&W custom shop for a refinish. Somebody there must have taken a liking to that gun, because when I got it back it had been completely gone through, cylinder notches recut and an oversized bolt fitted, polished and reblued. Looks like it just came off the line. A real treasure now.

Sure is fun to rescue a gun that's had a hard life and put it back to proud condition.

Nice.

I would love to find one like it, I should have picked one up years ago.

Still out there especially if you'll take a later model say a 14-3. I passed one of those and should have purchased it.
