Why did I wait

So long to bring 2400 into my life? I am finding it to be a very versatile powder with accurate result in the 44 and 454, getting ready to load some 45 Colt with 255s and 285s over 2400 for the Flattop 45, May try the same loads in the Freedom Arms.

If you have 2400 and Unique

what other pistol powders do you really need.

Unique

by Dave B @, Alamogordo New Mexico, Wednesday, November 12, 2014, 13:37 (3669 days ago) @ MR

I have used more Unique than all other pistol powders combined. I use a fair amount of H110 and HS6, but lately it has been Unique and 2400, I think you're right, a man could easily get by with these 2.

How about RedDot?

they are saying that Unique will do what Red Dot will do

by bj @, Wednesday, November 12, 2014, 21:36 (3669 days ago) @ Frank S

Red Dot is good for medium to light loads, and very economical because it takes so little of it to work.

For the most part Unique will do what Red Dot will do, but Red Dot cannot do all that Unique will do.

A lot of truth in that. Almost everything else is

If you have 2400 and Unique

Amen!

You can cover any pistol cartridge with those two. And if you are into shooting cast and reduced loads most rifles too. I know some hate Unique but I have yet to find a powder that can approach its utility. I have shot a bunch of it over the years.

Dave, give 2400 in your .45-70 a try with cast bullets it works well.

I'd be interested to hear how it works when used in cold

by AkRay, Wednesday, November 12, 2014, 14:24 (3669 days ago) @ Dave B

weather. I've had hangfires with 44 magnum rounds that were loaded with W296 or H110 when hiking in -10 F degree temperatures. My angel watching over me was on the ball that day!

Ray; w/ magnum pistol primers? Unique is messy at 20+ degree

I had good luck to minus 20 (The coldest I have shot at) with 296 & magnum CCI primers.

Ray; w/ magnum pistol primers? Unique is messy at 20+ degree

AkRay,
2400 will work fine in cold temperatures. Use a heavy crimp, and in extremely cold weather, you might want to use Magnum primers.

Thanks for the advice, Ken. I might switch over to 2400

by AkRay, Thursday, November 13, 2014, 01:21 (3669 days ago) @ Ken O'Neill

after some of the experiences I've had with H110/W296.

Rob, I used to load everything with standard primers.

by AkRay, Thursday, November 13, 2014, 01:19 (3669 days ago) @ Rob Leahy

I think I need to start using magnum primers, and maybe a propellant that is more resistant to colder temperatures.

I started loading with those two powders,,,

which were the 2nd and 3rd cans I ever bought. In retrospect, there's little handgun loading I have done in the last 38 years, that could not have been accomplished with only those two.

8 pound jug of Unique was an fine investment.... ;~`)

.45 Colt stuff lives on it. Am getting towards the bottom -- and weeping for not having bought a case -- 'back then'. ;~`)
