Anyone try these in 30-30?

No, but I hear.....

....that they make good turkey loads.

Not the 311008 but I tried a similar 120 FN bullet in my 30/30 with Trail Boss and it did not work out. Never tried any other loads.

I'll fire these in a Handi Rifle but may try them in my "94".

There is a Lee mold that is very similar...

... the "ash can" (?) that works well. I used them over 8 gr. of IMR SR4759 (sad that is going away).

Am working on a project loading 910 .32 WCF cases with the 3118 over 5.5 gr of Unique. Seems to shoot well in my Marlin 1894CL. I would think that this same bullet should do well at the same velocities from the .30-30.

I'm looking for a cheap load that will give at least 2" groups at 50 yards. I have 16 pounds of Promo left which I use in handguns but hope to find a lite load using this powder in a couple rifles.

It might just be my memory but unfamiliar with Promo.

I've found it a bit hotter than Red Dot in chrono testing. I use about 8-10% faster than red dot. That's great because it makes it even more economical! I need to pick up another eight pound jug to last me several more years!

I bought four 8 pound jugs, have 2 left. Plenty of cheap shooting.

I am going to have to look for some. Alliant powders

by Hobie ⌂ @, Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Saturday, November 01, 2014, 21:54 (3616 days ago) @ Creeker

are a rare thing around here despite our proximity to Radford. I just ordered 8 lbs of RedDot in our club purchase but don't know if I'll get it. LOTS of applications!

plant is being taken up with "government" contracts, directly or indirectly and that there isn't enough capacity to also produce canister grade powders. Although the source is a plant employee we can't verify the information.

I'd like to know what the Govt is doing with the powder. Stockpiling rifle ammo, howitzer rounds, cannon shells, etc? There aint much of a war right now with big ammo expenditures unless they are giving the sh!t to ragheads to kill each other with (go boys!)

Use to be the employees could purchase powder once a year. Red Dot was a favorite & many pounds were floating around Beckley & Raleigh County at one time.

Yes I do. I have a 94 that had some serious rust in the bore the last couple of inches. I cut it down to just over 16" and put a reciever sight on it. when we moved to the country last year I was wanting something a fairly quiet but with more punch than a .22. Trying to find a reasonably priced .32-20 proved difficult so I decided to turn the 94 into one.

The load I setteled on was a 311008 and a 31133 (the hollow point version of the 008) with 5.4gr of Red Dot and no filler. I either used WLP primers or Wolf Large Rifles. The bullet is seated and crimped in the top lube grove and feeds fine. My 16" carbine holds 6+1 vs 5+1 of full length cartridges. Velocity is just under 1200 FPS with the solid and just over with the HP.

At 50 yards groups hover around an inch sometimes just under. At 100 it will do 2-2.5". They way it is sighted in at 100 it hits to the center of the front bead and at 50 it is right on the top edge. It is a blast to shoot, I need to get out and cast a pile of 008s now that it is cooling off.

311008 at 50 yards the 3 lower shots were first then I adjusted the sights and the 3 upper are the final setting. This was 5.0 gr I setteled on 5.4 because it worked better with my lyman powder measure.

008 at 100 yards centering the bead on the round plate.

Same hold with the 33HP I remember now it shoots a little higher than the solid. Also at 100 yards.

Nice gong.

I played with the little RCBS 95gr Keith for the 32 mag and 7gr of Red Dot for plinkers in my Winchester 30/30. Shot nice, was a lot of fun but hit way off the adjustability of the sights. We switched to a cheap Lee 150gr gas check because it hits to the sights and my 10 year old son and I have had a lot of fun with that rifle.

I would do something else too if I was going to go back and forth between loads. At some point I may change but for now that is all that rifle will be fed. A have another 20" 94 that is sighted in with 150gr loads, but it seldom gets shot.

by Fowler, Friday, October 31, 2014, 13:29 (3617 days ago) @ Jared

It wasn't bouncing loads I simply didn't have enough sight adjustment available. At 1200fps I really could tell a difference in recoil so I couldn't see a draw back. Fun rifles for sure.

Yeah they are. It is nice and cheep when you are only out a primer , a pinch of powder and 115gr of lead..

I have a different front sight and base on this one. So no telling if I could have got it zeroed with the factory sights.

and send some 257 rounds down range so I guess I will stuff some of my 115 gain "Soupcans in a few thutty-thutty cases and see if the Contender likes them.

Herrett may digest a reduced amount of the PROMO.

Let us know how it goes.

I'm closed but I have a friend who's casting with my molds & doing some fine work. If you would like I'm sure he would cast you a few?

Thank you for the offer Lynn.

I have a couple hundred on hand but I will keep it in mind when I run low.
