We'll have to meet out there someday and do some shooting. I mostly shoot flintlock but that 6 inch gong at 400 yards is in particular danger from a 7mm Remington with Hornady Whitetail ammunition. On thing neat on a sunny day is to shoot 500 grain 45-70 bullets out of a trapdoor and watch from behind and see the bullet go all the way to the target (freshly cast shiny bullets

Shame we live so close & cross paths seldom.

Yeah its a shame and I know it. I could learn a lot about shooting and casting for sure. Man that was the prettiest day and I was stuck in an office. My trips to the range are usually at the crack of dawn. Some day's I'll have the whole range to myself until I am exhausted.

I try to go there once a week if possible but of the winter it can be hard to get in & out so if I require a bench or shelter I go to Plum Orchard. I find the snow, rain, or early morning hours keep the crazies away for a couple hours.

10-4 on those crazies
Sometimes I take one of the crazies type of guns but mine is plain. I use a 10 round magpul mag in my AR-15 A1 to plink at the gongs. My A-1 model with the aperture sights will hit a sideways water filled coleman fuel can with a dead on hold at 300 yards (I have a witness). My spotter asked how can you even see it? I told him "I know where it is at even if I cant see it cause I put it there". Seriously though I have a long range aperture that sort of makes the front sight a little crispier.
Now for the load Barnes TSX 55 grain flat base over 26.5 grains of IMR 4895 (Nato pressure). I've killed a farm deer at close to 200 yards with a bang flop from a shorter AR with a 16 inch barrel with this load but at 300 yards even with a 20 inch barrel the velocity must have slowed down a lot as the load poked three holes in the water filled Coleman fuel without upsetting the can. The first exit hole was about the size of a dime which drained the water and the other two holes were about 22 caliber.
For what its worth compared with the AR and it poking holes a 7mm Remington Magnum loaded with a Hornady 139 grain spire point will absolutely destroy that water filled can at 300 yards with an exit hole about the size of a cantaloupe.

What do you think of that Ely Sport?
by Hobie , Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Thursday, October 09, 2014, 15:50 (3687 days ago) @ Creeker
I've been shooting SK Standard Plus in my 52C and it is much better than it should be.

I'm guessing SK Standard Plus is better ammo. The Eley Sport is at the bottom of Eley's list. It does well but produces flyers. I've shot it in my 1411 Anschutz. It will shoot tiny groups expect for flyers.

The '06 produced this. BTW the target should say Sierra #2130.

That's what I like; nice round groups. I'll take a group like that over one strung up and down any day. 50 grains of Varget does it for me in my old 760 with the same bullet. The load is consistent but the old battle axe (760) is woods gun I've never shot passed 200 yards which look like your 300 yard groups.

Never used Varget. I did see a pound of the stuff at the gun show yesterday for $30.00. BTW I like the 760 platform.
