Never been on the site to a few weeks ago, researching a TV personality and they had info on this site. Never been back to website.

Few days ago I get a e-mail from someone in my state in the same business I am in that I do not know that wants to be my neighbor so to speak. And below was a list of three people I know on linked in.

All three were from this site, two have not posted in five to ten years and the other has posted maybe twice this year. That is the part that sends alerts to me.

Anyway what is it and is there any advantage to becoming involved with linked in?

superposed to be a networking resource. I found that I received a ton of looking for a new job inquiries. So many and so often WAY out of the realm of feasibility for Simply Rugged, that I deleted my account.

One of my former students said it best - "LinkedIn is like facebook for adults." It's a social network for professionals to keep in touch. You can give the site access to our address book and it will match folks you have in it to "help" you make connections. It's an easy way to not have to maintain an address book if your contacts change jobs.

Facebook for professionals is a good description. I initially signed on looking to network to get work. However, that has not panned out. It is another way to run down genealogical targets. It is one of those things that I keep but don't pursue. I have known people who have found employment as I intended but it didn't appear that it would work for me due to my refusal to relocate.

"Facebook for adults" as mentioned above. Also the possibility of networking. The IDEA is that you only add folks YOU KNOW and can vouch for, so to speak. I'm there for others, for the most part. Several college colleagues, folks from diverse work backgrounds that I know personally, etc. Every now and then I get job suggestions in very inane ways. Supposedly there are a lot of different companies looking 'for folks with YOUR qualification'. Perhaps, but I've never expressed a desire to change the work I do. It's there, just don't look at it much. Also, it's a way folks can vouch for your qualifications. The site asks, "Does so and so know about such and such?" and folks can say "Yes" and you get brownie points or something.

If you're not in the job market, there's no point for falling for their phony-baloney appeal.

Requests from people to link with who I do not know and aren't even in my field. I think they try to "sell it" as a networking tool. Not from what I can tell! We have a semi-generic work email that isn't remotely anybody's name and we see requests to it all the time too!

through my gmail account. I have patently ignored all of them to avoid adding another diversion of time.

I have several relatives involved. They hooked me in and I had a devil of a time getting rid of them. I kept trying to get my account deleted with little success. Finaly sent a threatinig e-mail that by law they had to stop and or I would find out how to pursue it and they finaly stopped. I am sure they are on the up and up but I did not need the networking.
