Back into the AR world
I had been pretty heavy into AR-15s at one time, built upwards of a dozen of them and had some very nice rifles and optics. We were facing a move when the last buying frenzy started and I sold out, of ARs anyway, sold every AR I had and every bit of 5.56 ammo. Made a tidy sum off it and figured I'd never get back into it.
Well... Let's just say I jumped back in. I decided I wanted to do a .308 AR-10, and started researching them. I had had an Armalite AR-10 before so I knew some of the differences, but suffice it to say that the "AR-10" world is a lot different. Different receivers, magazines, barrels and bolts, handguards, it can be very confusing. It stems from the fact that there is no "mil spec" for the AR-10 like there is for the AR-15/M-16. So I decided to but a complete rifle instead of building one. I ended up ordering a Palmetto complete lower and complete upper, the total is right at $900 plus shipping and transfer fee. Everything should be here the middle of next week.
I also realized that there is a glut of AR-15 stuff on the market and jumped back into that racket too. CDNN has some great deals right now and I ordered a Colt CSR complete rifle and a Black Rain billet complete lower. If nothing else these will be good investments for the next buying frenzy.
Back into the AR world
I've been thinking about a 308 AR but just haven't made the jump. Saw some this week priced from 1095.00 to 1650.00 locally.
7.62mm Sturmgewehr
I personally like the AR/Stoner system for 5.56mm carbines and rifles however never really warmed up to the big bore ARs. I had a Armalite AR10 Infantry rifle and while reliable and accurate it weighted 10lbs. Sold it and never went back to .30 ARs.
If one is looking for a really good choice in a full caliber autorifle they would be hard pressed to do better than the PTR/HK 91 series. The new ones have gone back to the HK spec chamber and will shoot anything that the bolt will close on and fire. The old model target PTR91 were set to ONLY shoot commercial ammo as a way to improve accuracy. Still, the rack grade PTR GI models will outshoot all but the fanciest M14s and leave any FAL in the dust. Most PTR GI91s will hold 1.5 MOA with ball and shoot match grade ammo into half that. They are as reliable and durable as an AK. They are a modular design that will accept any number of readily available stocks, furniture, sights, etc. They are handy compact rifles a foot shorter than the M14 or FAL. Mags and parts are cheap!
Some will say that the fluted chamber destroys the brass however I have reloaded for them since Mel Tappan (that will date it for you old guys) sold me on them with no problems. The only issue in reloading is to find the brass because it leaves the rifle as a secondary projectile upon firing. One should not stand to the right side of a 91 shooter.
I have a number of rifles and consider the PTR GI91 the best of the .30 autoloaders.
I had an original HK91 back when and sold it to a guy in 1984 to raise money to buy a gold Rolex DateJust. When he brought it home, his wife packed her bags and went home to momma. I still have the watch and he still has the HK and a different wife. He thanks me for selling him the rifle every time he sees me.

G-3 Fan...But I like my FNs as well...wouldn't mind a LW AR
.308 either.... MY old CETME with H/K Diopter sight and slider stock is still tough reliable and accurate.
old photo. The PTR in the middle is long gone...As Byron states it was .308 only and not 7.62 capable...3 CETME and a Hess all work superbly. I am happy to hear the PTR can build to that standard, at last.

Cheesy plastic stock on the middle one...
They broke all the time. No good POS.
I have a spare of set of the original G3 wood furniture in next to new condition.
Want it?
I'm getting rid of all my guns. They are incongruent with the need for world peace and harmony, and probably responsible for all my violent thoughts and need to be in control of things around me.

Uhhh....Byron, do you have a birthday coming up ?

I love that story about the sale...
...I've seen that happen a couple of times. The husband never seems to regret the decision.

Uhhh....Byron, do you have a birthday coming up ?
Byron has to be having a birthday.
He knows full well that peace does not come from meaningful dialog until after the shooting.
No birthday........
Just trying to do my part for world peace.
