Looked at a Rem-Marlin in 44 Mag. Looked decent but then I looked down the barrel and the riflng seemed very shallow. Any one also notice this or is it just my lack of knowledge.

The Marlins I have, all but one have Ballard barrels. When I looked at the rifling the first time I thought I had made a mistake and gotten a microgroove. Then I ask on line and found out it was their Ballard rifling. Ballards have six groove and microgrooves have twelve. Both Ballard and microgroove 44 magnums have 1/38 twist rates. The microgroove barrels have microgroove roll marked on the barrel. Ballards don't say microgroove, but don't say Ballard either.

Glen Fryxell's article on microgroove barrels states that some models are still made with microgroove barrels. His examples are 22LR, 22Magnum, Model 336's in 30-30 and 35 Remington, and Model 1894's in 32-20 CL and 41 magnum FG.
If it is the "Ballard" rifling I don't know, I'll have to

look at one in the shop to render an opinion as to whether it is shallow or not, at least on the samples available for my perusal.

Hobie,
This is the rifle. I am pretty sure all of the 1894 models have the Ballard style rifleing. I would be happy to hear what you find.

Yes, I get that the Ballard rifling seems shallow to you. I'll take a look at others tomorrow when I get to work.

If used, perhaps the previous owner fire lapped it.
